Why would the Devils even consider that deal? Doesn’t make much sense.

I don't like that for the Penguins or Devils. The list of players I'm willing to move that lotto pick for is a short one, and no one I think Buffalo would consider moving is on it. Especially if we're also giving up a legit top 4 defenseman. Unless we get a replacement for Petry somewhere, Pittsburgh shouldn't do this even if we took the 1st out, our defense would be too bare.
And I don't think New Jersey accepts if that's a first for just Marino. He's been stellar for them this season and they're definitely not moving him unless they bring Severson back.

Even if we extend Severson, we shouldn’t move Marino. The current right side works…and if Sevo signs a favorable contract, I think we take it and deal with Nemec’s arrival next summer (2024).

Agree 100%. Id be okay with a trade for oloffson if sabres wanna move him but I wouldn't give up that 1st for him (even with the 3rd coming back). He's a Ufa next year too i believe.

These are trades proposed by fans of the Penguin's and Devil's.
There may be some additional modifications, but they are close.

The Penguin's trade was proposed without retention on Olofsson or the third but Luukkonen was added and not included in the team.
The trade was made in the context of clearing cap space as Petry is over paid for what he brings to the ice.
Buffalo is one of the few teams that has the cap space and the need for a veteran RHD.
The trade essentially presumes, Olofsson has the value of a second and it would take a second to move Petry's contract so the two seconds and third add up to first.
The math could be in error, but the Penguins may consider this as the window is closing and the draft pick is two to three year (The Kid and Malkin will be 38 and 39 when the pick would in the line up).
If Olofsson can score 28 goals with Mittelstadt as his primary center how many will he score with Malkin or Crosby as his center.

The Devils trade was proposed to make room for Nemec and get a lottery ticket in the draft.
You are all correct the trades in the real world are not likely to happen, but with a bit of massaging (Buffalo adds to the Penguins and the Devils remove a prospect) the trades are viable.

Obviously this would be quite the off season.
This does show the power of the purse, and how it increases the value of Olofsson.
Petery being a short term to help shepherd Power and Marino being a long term fix to the RHD.

If tweaking needs to be made to make the Pens trade work, it's a lot of it. Yes, Petry is overpaid for what he is. But not to the point that this trade treats him. I look at that and assume that he's being considered a cap dump. I don't think he is. Being overpaid and being a cap dump are not the same thing. His cap hit does bring down his cap hit, but he's still a solid 2nd pairing defenseman who can play 1st pairing minutes when needed.
I'm not happy with trading a 1st in a deal like this unless I'm getting a better player than Olofsson back, let alone our 2023 first. A lotto pick in one of the best drafts maybe ever? Not a chance.

I have the same view. Petry is overpaid and his value doesn't match his cap hit but he still has value

This was my exactly my thought. Petry still has value just not at 6 mil. If we're gonna move him, which I'd be okay with, I'd rather retain and keep the 1st. I think petry retained could easily fetch a 4th.

I think we could get that at least without retention for a team like Buffalo or Detroit that has a young team that could use a mentor on the back end and has the cap space.

The Devils trade was proposed to make room for Nemec and get a lottery ticket in the draft.

This is not entirely correct.
Two major assumptions were required for the Devils to consider moving Marino to the Sabres:
1. Marcus Pettersson, whom I consider superior to Marino, is made available for trade (Sharangovich + Foote).
2. Severson leaves a significant amount of AAV on the table to get max term in order to resign with the Devils ahead of 23-24.

Coupled with the emergence of Kevin Bahl and Luke Hughes being capable of playing as 2RHD, the two above assumptions make for an interesting scenario from a Devils POV in exploring what John Marino could fetch ahead of the 2023 draft as he'd be surplus to requirements.

Ideally Nemec wouldn't enter the Devils lineup in 23-24 as to preserve his ELC one more year.
My AGM, the one you referred to, is for the 24-25 season, one full year after my Marino trade was intended to go down.

Anyway, your suggested Marino trade would work to as it has #14 coming back to the Devils instead of #13.
