Love the idea of Lindholm on the Avs but I think the Avs decline. Not enough term on his deal, no cap spacefor him, no real cap space to re-sign him and giving up the guy in this trade they'd be expecting to step in afterwards plus the pick in a deep draft that could be the other later potential player to replace him.

We can retain on Lindholm. If one of Stenberg or Willander is still available by the Avs pick, I'd easily do this trade.

Exactly why the Avs shouldn't do it. If Stenberg or Willander is still available that means the Avs have given up two potential future 2Cs in Newhook and let's say Stenberg for a rental in Lindholm. Even with retention (which will still be tight) they likely can't afford to extend Lindholm afterwards. They could afford to give up Newhook in the deal but not the '23 1st and vice versa (and better Newhook from a cap PoV). They end up in a Kadri situation again without having at least had 3 years out of the player and without a young potential replacement waiting in the wings. I've toyed with the idea of Girard, Newhook and the '24 1st for Lindholm (+) which would maybe work for the Avs cap-wise though very tight, and even then extending Lindholm would be tough (basically because trading Girard would mean they've extended Toews which will eat up a chunk of cap). That likely doesn't work for Calgary though as their D is pretty set.

Absolutely agree especially I find the issue with parting with Newhook because say you can’t keep Lindholm then your relying on JLF to try and become that guy, which as much as I like him may be a stretch.

Lindholm is a one year rental with Colorado, he's going to want at least 8 x 7.5 to 8 x 8 and Colorado doesn't have the cap space. Plus no way does Lindholm return the equivalent of 3 1st round picks.

I don't see Toronto having a need for Backlund. There are plenty of other teams that need a strong shutdown 3C line. For his role, Backlund puts up a lot of points for someone who is used so defensively. Buffalo, Ottawa, Penguins, Colorado, Carolina, NYI or NJ all seem like better candidates for a trade.
