Draft Day Trades I Wouldnt Hate

Description
Just throwing out some hypotheticals on some draft day trades I think could work. Pretty much all of these are really dependant on who's available. Which one would be your favourite and who would you select with those specific picks? Lottery is in 3 days!

1.
DET
  1. 2023 1st round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
#14 Overall

Pittsburgh gains more draft capital which they desperately need. Likely still a really good player at #18 and they can get back into the second round.
PIT
  1. Eighteenth, Overall
  2. Forty Third, Overall
Additional Details:
Trade up to select the player that is most wanted. Personally for me I would hope to select Barlow with this pick although I wouldn't be disappointed in alot of other selections.
2.
DET
  1. 2023 1st round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
#8 Overall

Another team who is hurt by not having a deep prospect pool that might look to add more lottery tickets. Unlikely to happen but I feel if they would entertain trading that pick that this is the type of offer that would be needed.
This trade could possibly be done with Philly as well as I feel they could also use some more kicks at the can to help with their rebuild.
WSH
  1. Eighteenth, Overall
  2. Forty First, Overall
  3. Forty Second, Overall
  4. Forty Third, Overall
Additional Details:
Big time trade up into the top 10. This really only makes sense if they feel really strongly about whoever is available. Maybe Michkov falls or Smith falls or else they really want Reinbacher and he's still there.
3.
DET
  1. 2023 1st round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
#19 Overall

Detroit again would have to feel very strongly about the player available here for their selection. They are likely also better off filling multiple organizational holes with those picks.
WPG
  1. Forty Second, Overall
  2. Forty Third, Overall
  3. Forty First, Overall
Additional Details:
Try to get another top 20 pick. I feel Winnipeg could use more depth in their prospect pool and maybe this is a way to try and fill out a couple positions. They don't currently have a second round pick so this would give them 3 picks in the top 45 instead of just 1.
4.
DET
  1. 2023 1st round pick (EDM)
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (PIT)
  3. 2023 3rd round pick (SJS)
Additional Details:
#25 Overall
#46 Overall
#68 Overall

Trade down scenario. Detroit might want to grab a certain player that they expect will be available later in the first round or early second round. I would do this and hopefully select Willander.
NSH
  1. Eighteenth, Overall
Additional Details:
Nashville has surplus picks this draft and some good prospects already. If they really like a player available and figure he won't be there at 25, just going with current pick placement even though it could change after round 2, they could easily trade up as they have 2 2nds and 3 3rds this draft.
5.
DET
  1. 2023 1st round pick (NJD)
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
#26 Overall
#96 Overall

Again using draft capital to move up and select the player we want. We would still have a second round pick and a late third in this scenario.
SJS
  1. Forty Second, Overall
  2. Forty Third, Overall
  3. Seventy Third, Overall
Additional Details:
Not as aggressive of a move up but still moving into the first round. Alot of interesting players between 20-50 so this might be something San Jose entertains.
6.
DET
  1. 2023 1st round pick (SJS)
Additional Details:
#4 Overall

Get that top end elite talent we are missing in Carlsson, Fantili or Michkov.
SJS
  1. Ninth, Overall
  2. Eighteenth, Overall
Additional Details:
Real crazy move up to select one of the top 4. Very unlikely San Jose or any other team around there would do this.

was this a typo? Did you mean 29th OA pick? If Florida wins this round their pick is at worst 29th

I think they are saying that if Florida makes the conference final they no longer had the 17th pick but the anywhere from 29th-32nd and the Islanders pick (which they hold) goes from 18th to 17th OA.

I think most of these teams would decline personally. Moving up in the draft is generally pretty expensive, especially into the top 10 or even top 5. For example, i can't I cant thnk of a single reason to ever trade Carlsson or Michkov for Reinbacher and Moore

Oh, I do agree with that. There are contract limits in this league. But I appreciate the craftsmanship all the same.

Draft day trades are of course hard to nail down prior to lottery and of course day of how the boards fall. The only straight out no I see is someone trading 4 for 9 and 18. Trading 4 maybe but it wouldn't be for two more picks it would have to include established assets already. You do t move 4 on more what ifs.

I'm cheering for Toronto but that would be a nice consolation prize for sure.

Yeah if Florida wins their round their pick goes to #29 overall. We hold the Islanders pick which is currently #18 overall so then it would drop to #17 overall.

I think the only unrealistic trade is the last one where I traded for #4. Would be very very very unlikely to happen which was stated in the trade. Just thought it would be fun to throw that in there.

I think the only really realistic trades are the Pittsburgh and Nashville ones. Maybe the San Jose one for #26 overall could be pretty likely as well. I tried to base values off of what I could remember of past trades and made it a bit more expensive to move up in this one.

Oh I totally agree, I just thought it would be fun to throw in there. Also I agree that once the lottery happens this will all change and obviously who goes where to start changes everything. It was more to just show that since we do have extra draft capital we could potentially make some moves up, or in the case of the Nashville trade move down to gain more.

yeah someone else clarified that above. I disagree though. For example the Winnipeg and Nashville trades completely contradict each other no? Why does it cost do the costs in moving up to 19th and 18th (for the respective receiving teams) vary so much?

Or do 3 mid/late 2nds really move you up 10 spots into the top 10? Like using 2015 as an example that would be Werenski for Chabot + bust + Blackwood + Cernak. But like 2014 for example that would be Nylander for Tuch + 3 busts.

This might make sense if the Caps were rebuilding, but they're trying to stay competitive for as long as Ovie's playing. To that end, prospect depth really doesn't matter to them. The 8th OA is an opportunity to add a really high end young prospect who could potentially make the jump soon enough to contribute before Ovie retires, but the 18th OA and a bunch of 2nds probably won't. If the Caps trade the 8th OA, it'll be along the lines of the DeBrincat trade last year to bring in an elite young forward.

I definitely don't disagree with you at all. It was more in the line that if they wanted to trade that pick to gain more assets that this would likely be the cost, not that it actually totally fits what Washington needs.

Pass the Isles 1st is 2 wins away from going from 18th to 17th. !7th pick plus Vancouver 43 and St Louis 42nd should move us up at least to 12th if not better. Yzerman will have tons of options with that pick.
