Trades
1.
PIT
  1. Lafferty, Sam
  2. Liljegren, Timothy
  3. Marner, Mitchell
  4. 2024 3rd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Leafs get two guys who are playoff performers and Stanley Cups, plus get a massive shake up to their core.
TOR
  1. Guentzel, Jake
  2. O'Connor, Drew [RFA Rights]
  3. Rust, Bryan
  4. 2024 2nd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Picks to even it. I keep seeing Marner for Jake swap, but I’d like to include Rust in this deal. He is a Michigan guy so he would probably waive, and we get a shake up as well. The money works too.

DeSmith on the taxi squad was the cherry on top.

Maple Leafs fans keep trading us Marner/Nylander so I think he was making it from the Pens perspective. Although went a little too overboard on the trade I think haha

I dont know if the value is on 100%, but you extended the window and gave us a younger player to build around without even giving up a first. I think you might be on to something

It's for sure off, but I dont know if it's by that much. Rust going the other way is what's tripping me up because I just dont know how the Leafs would view him and whether his value would be negative or positive.

This trade is all out of sorts and is an overpay for Toronto. Also I think the ship has sailed of us moving Guentzel at this point.

What do you think has caused the ship to sail? I just dont think there's any way of knowing until we see who the GM is. Everything is on the table at this point

Well FSG wants to win still and compete and I don’t think that involves trading a key core player who’s provided us with production in both the regular season and been a phenomenal playoff performer. Just makes sense to keep him and use our cap space to weaponize the bottom 6 to maintain a consistency which has evidently been the problem over and over again for the past few years. Our top guys carry the load and everyone else sits back and they claw us into the playoffs. That’s been the storyline year after year. It just feels like this team has been constantly operating at like 60-70% of their potential. Just imagine how lethal our previous teams could’ve been with a productive bottom 6 and some form of consistency night to night which we simply haven’t had. And when we have had any consistency, it’s been our top guys, Guentzel being one of them.

I just think its impossible to say. It's a really complicated situation and while I dont think we will rebuild, even if they thought we should I doubt FSG would come out and say that before they have a GM. It's not as simple as compete or dont compete either. A GM could want to remain competitive but also find it vital we restock our prospect pool. Guentzel's impending contract could play a role too. Just so many different variables. Guentzel hasn't been a problem, not even close. But an 8 x 8 contract extension could be. And when in a position like us it's not as simple as keep all our good players trade our bad one's. Team needs a shakeup and he might be the only one with value. Besides the core and Peterson I could see anyone being moved. Definitely see what you are saying, I just think there's so many unknowns. Like let's say they want Dubas for GM. But Dubas says the best route to get back to contending is to add some youth, focus on the future more, and restock the prospect pool. Would they rather take their top candidate and let him do what he wants, or get someone lower down on the list who wants to go all in. That's a question I dont know the answer to

Yea it’s a very tough situation that I don’t have an answer too nor do I even think I know what the plan is as much as I’m speculating and trying to understand everything for what it is. I guess we will just have to stay patient and see and learn as the org moves along. Regardless it should make for a wild and fun offseason. I’m excited for our future if that’s the direction we go more towards like an LAK did a couple years back or if it’s staying competitive and we go out and get some guys I’d be interested to see how that goes too.
