Draft pick swap

Created by: Bmurch
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 9, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
There seems to be a clear top 5 in the 2023 draft, with Carlsson, Michov and Smith going next 3 after Bedard and Fantilli. After that there is a bit of a drop off.
For a team to take Michov they have to be willing to not being able to contend for the next 3 years which fits Arizona perfectly. If Michov is available at Montreal's #5 pick, they can trade that to Arizona for them to pick him for the 6th overall and Ottawa's 12th overall pick.

I'm not saying Montreal would do this, but would you do this as a Habs fan or would the Coyotes consider doing this?

ARI declines and according to my draft chart I’m looking at that’s an overpay heavy in MTL favor.

5 OA - 8.2

6 OA - 7.6
12 OA - 5.5

8.2 to 13.1. Yea… that’s pretty one sided…

Where is this chart from? Is it the same chart every year or is it customised to the depth of the draft. Because with such a strong draft I don't think those values make sense tbh. And I agree this draft is top5 heavy.

I get that, but this isn't an average draft where 5 v 6 is very close in value. Michov has the potential to be the 2nd most talented player in this draft, after 5, Benson is probably the most talented. I like him, but there is a huge gap between those 2

Is that not an argument for this trade? It seems like it. More high end talent not less? THey would have to trade up for high end talent.

Yea that's fair. What if Habs also put in Florida's pick which for sake of argument lets say will be #28?

I don’t believe Montreal actually takes michkov, Arizona just gambles on that and moves on to plan B if they do. 6 and 12 are far too valuable

Then you should definitely draft Michkov at 5 and not trade out for two lesser assets... The fact you even consider it means you know that isn't true. 6 and 12 is worth more.

I'd be happy to take Mitchkov at six, personally, but there's no way I'd pay a premium to move up one spot and get him. Too many questions unanswered. The team that takes him is rolling the dice that those questions have satisfactory answers. That'd be fine with me at six, because AZ also holds number 12. They can gamble and not think twice. But trading both of those picks to roll the dice? Easy pass for me. Draft is too deep through 12, although I agree as a prospect Michkov is clearly a step up on the guys who are going to go 6-12.

I understand the second half of your comment but this makes no sense. I guess nobody should ever propose a trade because one side wins according to you? I like Michov, but maybe Montreal management doesn't want the risk with Michov so they go with the 2 lessor assets. And it is true, his NHLe is even higher than Bedard, and was the sure-fire #2 until his contract was signed and the war started

And who said Michkov was 100% going 5th? Also I could use the same argument for saying one of Carlsson or Smith could be available at 5/6? That trade is too heavy in favor of MTL, which is why ARI won’t do it. Also because ARI wants to keep their assets and draft at their said picks and even acquire more if they can.

Couldn’t agree more and this trade is shifted towards MTL side by a good margin. Arizona would easily decline that for the reasons you just stated.

Not sure where it’s from I got it in an attachment on a forum on here. However it seems to be pretty accurate being that the top 5 picks are of value that would be up to par with the prospects of this draft.

You can propose whatever you want to. It's the internet. I'm just telling you that even you know the gap between Michkov's vaoue and the value of 6 and 12 combined favours Montreal. Even though Michkov is a better prospect than either of the other two will be. If Michkov's value was only affected by his quality as a prospect, the whole discussion would be moot bc he'd definitely be off the board by the time the third pick was on the clock. There are clearly other factors at play, and pretending there isn't and that Montreal would be doing someone a favour by trading down a spot for two top 12 picks is approaching delusional.
