Initial Creation Date: May 10, 2023

Description
At 9 OA - Habs draft Reinbacher, or fail onto Dvorsky
At 17 OA - Habs draft any of Wood, Barlow, Heidt, Gulyayev (in that order)
At 29 - Habs draft Dragicevic, But, Gauthier (in that order)

It may not be Elite talent, but the team would get bigger and this would be a huge infusion of skill at places where we are weak.

Red Wings do this. The 5OA+3rd is more fair, though.

Appreciate it. It lets the Habs draft a Goalie they desperately need as well

5 and 37 for 9 and 17

Wings accept and take Michkov. I don't care if hes not coming for another 3 years. he'll be worth the wait.

Detroit then has 37,41,42,43. They package two of those picks to move back up into the first round. somewhere in the mid-20's.

Detroit says no. Likely to get a similarly skilled player, or even the player we want at #9. Only if it's Michkov but getting Michkov doesn't really solve the other organizational hole we would likely fill at #17.

Maybe if it's Michkov. Do you think the gap from Smith to Moore/ Leanord/ Barlow/ Reinbacher/ or whoever else is worth the gap of who we take at #17 compared to #37?

I think Habs don't do this is Smith or Carlsson are available. I think they are worried about Michkov though.

Habs draft Smith at 5 if he is available. This is a Michkov-only situation.

The way I see the draft playing out, I don't think Carlsson is available at #5, or else I might stand a little differently. I don't know if Smith is THAT much better than whoever else is available between #6-10. Michkov would be the exception. I actually like Moore about as much as I like Smith, although I haven't seen enough of both to have a super high end opinion.

Only if it's Michkov. Smith I wouldn't do it. Carlsson I would do it but the chances he's be there at 5 are slim and the chances Montreal would trade the pick if he were at 5 are even slimmer.

But with Michkov. I don't care about the Russian factor or his KHL contract. If he was from any other country other than Russia and not playing in the KHL he would be the slam dunk #2. He's better than Fantilli. You just have to be patient and wait for him. Detroit would continue their slow progression and in 3 years time when they are once again a playoff team, insert a more physically mature Michkov and suddenly we're actually a threat to make noise in the playoffs.

Yeah seems like this is an only Michkov type scenario. We would need to get back into the first round somehow, too many good players available there that could fill other holes. I think the rebuild extends a bit of we do this, moves along faster if we don't.

I think Smith is clearly ahead of Moore and Benson from an offensive perspective. I think he's worse defensively, but you can teach defense...

I see the draft going

Bedard
Fantilli
Carlsson/Smith
Smith/Carlsson
Michkov (but I don't see the Habs meddling in the middle of this military mess)

Defense you can teach but play style and willingness to play defense is more on the character of the player. Considering this would be Michkov it has me thinking alot. Don't want to give to that #17 pick is my biggest issue. But Habs, like Detroit, need more high end talent as they have alot of prospects. I don't see a scenario where we go #9, #41, #42 for #5.

Honestly though when people post trades where I'm on the fence, it probably works so I can see this working in a Michkov scenario.

Is it's Michkov I think I might be on board but not for Smith. Don't see Carlsson getting there but he I would also be on board with.
