Why stop there? If you're getting Kane and panarin you might as well get a goalie upgrade and atleast 1 LD. Not saying I agree with this route but if you get Kane and panarin then you're going for it.

I know Panarin was a ghost in the playoffs but I feel like he’d be worth more than a second to trade.

But at the same time if the Rags want to clear cap nobody will help them for free. I think they’d dump Trouba before Panarin.

If it only took a second to get a player of that caliber, full send. But I think it would take more, even though his cap hit is huge.

Given his poor playoff performance, Panarin it still a top player in the league and ppg player every year. You need to add more for him.

I going to take a stab at the whole Toronto trading Murray concept that gets thrown around here daily. If you use the Athletic value chart for what picks are worth, the Boston first is around 3.1 value, the Tampa 2nd is valued at 1.5 and the difference is 1.6 or the Florida/NYI 2nd round pick in value. Would anyone with a straight face expect the Hawks to take the 6 million Murray is owed for the 49th pick in this draft...because that is the value proposed here. This is not last Summer where the Hawks needed 2 goalies to fill out roster spots and the Mrazek move was made in conjuction with 2 other moves to get into the first round 3 times over. Hawks have rostered goalies, made 3 first round picks last year and have 2 each lined up the next 3 drafts and otherwise are in a little different place and mindset on things going forward. The Mrazek trade was pretty poor "value" in retrospect, but I think some of the valuation from the Hawks was needing a roster goalie and misjudging how bad Mrazek actually was.

Dumping Murray's deal should cost a high to mid 2nd. If you trade Bostons's 1st for the Dallas 3rd, the value is the 34th pick in the draft (one better than the Hawks 2nd). If you trade that Boston pick for the Hawk 3rd, the value is the 53rd pick or one worse than the Tampa 2nd.

Countering your point, Buying out Mrazek costs a little under 900k this year and a little under 1.5MM next season. We won't be close to the cap ceiling, so moving up almost a round into the first where there is a much more likely chance of getting a good player to take on a goalie with a cup on his resume, for one season. The value idea is important, but the actual success rate and odds of a 28th pick hitting is higher than a late 2nd, which for our rebuild is the only concern. That trade is easy to take for the hawks, who don't have financial concerns, and is well worth it.

Having to buyout Mrazek IS actually my point, that the situation is different than the one last Summer where we took Mrazek for less than we probably should have otherwise because we had no NHL goalies under contract when we did. Buying out Mrazek at 3 million real dollars after acquiring Murray at 6 million real dollars is spending 9 million dollars to flip picks that get you a net value of the #49 OA pick which is a terrible use of resources. We don't need a goalie, we are not entering the draft with Zero 1st round picks, and the GM has his finger prints all over the roster now having torn it down almost completely. Toronto is not the only team needing/wanting to move cap in a real tight environment, in fact I would say probably 3/4ers of the league would love to move at least one contract off their cap. The supply of teams that both have cap space and the financial resources (Arizona playing in front of 4600 fans a night probably has little appetite) is less than a single handful that could or would take 4.7 in cap and 6 in salary for a terrible oft injured goalie like Murray.

Before I ever consider the Tampa 2nd for the Boston 1st to take Murray (Again for the value of the #49OA pick), I'll talk to teams that have bad prospect pools where multiples of the Hawks 2nds/3rds might be enticing for a quantity over quality approach....Colorado, Vegas, and even NYR are 3 teams around the Boston pick that are not stellar in their prospect pool that might prefer 2 or 3 lotto tickets to one in the late first. Caps, Pitts, and Vancouver all have bad prospect pools and much higher picks where the Hawks definitely have the draft capital and cap space to work through fairer value moves to end up with one of their picks (maybe taking a bad contract Myers, Mantha, Granlund, or using the Tampa 1st to upgrade or some combo of that with 2nd's). It is way easier to take much cheaper dumps to accumulate mid to late 2nds then having to do this terrible value Murray deal for the privilege of spending 9 million and ending up with an equally terrible goalie than the one you were forced to buyout.
