Why would Buffalo trade a great young center with term for a guy who probably wouldn’t resign? No the Sabres are gonna stay the course, keep Cozens and Kulich, and make another great pick in the draft.

Buffalo declines. They don't need centers therefore they have no need to pay the price for Matthews.

Trade him to a team that needs a center and Matthews would resign in and you'll get good assets.

Only team trading anything for mathews is arizona, everyone else is just gonna watch you lose him for nothing next year.
