Nylander and Matthews aren't taking discounts. What's so really special about retaining Matthews and Nylander anyway?

Or... Be an adult and Just don't sign players if their contract demands are beyond what their value is to the team?

Let's ignore that NMC are likely to be part of those new contracts. Players talk, and teams that sign players and then turn around and trade players out of spite aren't likely to sign any premium free agents after that.

One is the best layer in franchise history the other is in the top 10.

Yeah, whatever contract Matthews signs, it will have a full NMC from beginning to end. Marner probably the same but maybe in years 5-8 the full NMC would drop to a M-NTC. Nylander might start off with no protection or M-NTC and transition to a full one or it might start with full-NMC and end with reduced protection.

Nylander in the top 10 over the last 100 years? C'mon. I just don't see how paying those two players more $$$$, makes the Leafs better.
