Bruins Retool

Team: 2023-24 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: May 24, 2023
Published: May 24, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Bruins need to move out salary. Some trades obviously there is assumed value. Gryz is a top4 puck moving D. Ullmark is worth a 1st at his current value, esp to goalie needy teams. Bruins need more physical presence on back end and they get that with veterans. Lohrei, Lysell not ready yet by all accounts, so i welcome the feedback

It’ll take more for us to trade a 20 goal scorer in division lol

Seattle passes on Hall. Too much of what they already have. Not worth taking on the cap hit to our position of depth.

I don't think Pit would trade their 1st for Hellebuyck, they certainly aren't for Ullmark. Swayman + and they would likely listen.

Maybe you´re right about Pitsburgh´s intentions, but Hellebuyck is easily worth a first to a lot of teams and Bruins won´t certainly trade Ullmark for a mere first! He´s just backed a team that has crushed all records - he´s worth double that to the right team and the Bruins have to squeeze the maximum return for all prime pieces they have (Ullmark, Gryz and maybe DeBrusk - Hall can probably be had for a second due to his 6M cap though). Many of the B´s top players also have NMCConfused, so there is just so many that are trade flexible.

The pecking order for (potentially) available goalies is:
Saros, Hellubuck (w/ extension), Swayman, Jarry, Hellubuck (w/o extension), Ullmark, FAs.

Ullmark has no history of being this good. Maybe he turned a corner? Maybe he was elevated by a great team? The answer today is as reliable as a magic 8 ball. Teams will not trade a 1st for a 30yo with one season of success. Smart teams at least.

I don't know why you think Ullmark is so valuable but I assure you, the numbers don't agree.

Sure, the rankings have held Hellebuyck as a star (rightfully so) and Jarry is probably next up, whilst Ullmark was a shadow figure in Buffalo, but he still managed four seasons above 0.915 (up to 0.935) with the Sabres - that´s what got him to Boston and he has kept that up (and more with the B´s present D core).

I don´t see the B´s ever trading Swayman, so count him out of your equation and Ullmark is no.4 according to your ranking - there are a whole lot more than four teams that scream for a legit goalie. He IS worth more - the only thing that can limit his value is teams trying to take advantage of the B´s cap issues.

Ullmark has never had a season (before this one) where he had a WAR greater than 1. He has more negative WAR seasons than positive WAR seasons. His high save % is due to a really good save % vs low quality shots. Medium and high quality shots, he isn't very good.

Just because Ullmark is 5 (4, if you remove Swayman), that doesn't mean he is worth a 1st. IMO, he is worth a low 2nd. That is entirely based on hope that he turned a corner. Hope is not a good strategy.

If you'd like I could bring up his numbers, but they aren't good.
