Flipping Montour for Long Term Success

Description
Why trade Montour?

If Florida was to keep him they'd either have to let him go next season for nothing (which might be worth it if it leads to a cup) or give him a new contract starting at the age of 30. I can not see Montour being able to replicate his production for any more than 3 years if he can even keep it up. Trading Montour this season could get them a very good return which they could flip to fill the teams gaps and make them more competitive for longer.

I know they are trading for a 30-year-old defenseman here which can look weird but Murphy is a great defensive defenseman on a good contract that won't become an anchor. Adding a young winger on a good contract would make the top 9 more connected and could solidify the lines.

The only worry I have is the offense failing if Ekblad has another down season since they wouldn't have their second offensive defenseman. Maybe they could look into getting a more two-way defenseman instead of signing Graves but the price and contract would have to be right. Orlov could be a good fit but the contract would have to relatively short because he is getting pretty old. Giving Lucas Carlsson the chance to prove himself wouldn't be a horrible idea either.

Do Oilers and Blackhawks accept the trades? Tweaking is always possible but I think the fit is there.

More crazy talk basing a trade on an extension. Oilers may not even cap for Montour now......and of course why would they want extend him for that term.........the same reason you donn't

It'll only be 3,5 million for the 2023-24 season and after that the cap is said to be rising most likely to around 86-88 million so I don't think it's and impossible task. If they cant fit him next season Oilers could trade someone like Ceci who's on a similar cap hit. As for the Bouchard problem is a bridge deal not an option? They could use the Dobson deal as a good start for a negotiation.

I doubt a 70 point defenseman on his last chance for a big deal will take 4-5 million. It'll be more like 6-7.

Yeah, and then find a 1.5-2 million lhd instead of paying graves. You are paying Murphy and graves 8.8 million a year to be average

Florida should definitely not go another season with the "Marc Staal in the second pair" idea. It has fortunately worked these playoffs but not having a player like Murphy or Graves in their top 4 has been hurting them occasionally.

Montour isn't a 70-point defenseman to the Oilers though. He scored nearly half his points on the PP, and isn't going to get PP time in Edmonton. So they aren't paying top dollar for a rental they'll only get partial use out of.
