Description
In all the deals I see where the Leafs trade Marner is that there isnt a bonafide setup guy that comes back. This one is no different as the lineup is full of shoot first guys and I think that'd be a huge problem.

So Kings take on an $11M player without sending back any salary? Take out Roy and Vilardi and still no.

They take back potentially $6m in salary if Byfield meets his bonus and Roy's $3+mil. The problem with this tool is you can't (or I dont know how to) 3 team trade which is almost a guarantee in any trade involving a $10+mil salary

LA and CHI decline. AZ might be interested.

Byfield met none of his bonuses this season. Roy won't be moved.

The only way a Marner to LA trade works is if Toronto takes back Doughty (assuming Doughty is even willing to waive his NTC), or Toronto takes back Petersen, Arvidsson, and Walker in addition to the prospect and draft pick haul they would get.

Both of those are longshots, so there's not a trade to be made here.

You've got $4.2 million in cap going out (Vilardi doesn't currently count against our cap) and Byfield's bonus is irrelevant since what counts is the cap on Opening Day, not July 1, 2024. And you've got $10.9 million in cap coming in plus two roster slots opened up, neither of which is going to be filled by Grebenkin or Hollowell, and that's if we wanted to trade away virtually the entire careers of Byfield and Vilardi (two potential All-Stars) for two seasons of Mitch Marner. So entirely apart from value, this exchange is literally a physical impossibility.

If you don’t want to pay for a 26 year old 99 point Selke finalist that was 1st team all-star at RW the last 2 seasons than you don’t get the 26 year old 99 point Selke finalist that was 1st team all-star at RW the last 2 seasons.

Simply, Marner will cost too much for your taste.

Hawks decline and counter with their '23 3rd in place of the '23 2nd.

I'm not saying I wouldn't pay for him. Like I said, there would be a significant prospect and draft pick haul going along with the pieces I mentioned. But if Toronto is getting such a huge haul, they need to accommodate the cap of the team that is giving up the huge haul. Toronto doesn't get a futures windfall and $8M+ in cap space.
