Offseason Changes

Created by: iAce
Team: 2023-24 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: May 14, 2023
Published: May 28, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think this summer we see 1 or 2 moves that none of us expect. I would also like to see BG get aggressive and move up the draft to get a center that will be here in a year or two. I'm going to put in moves that I could see happening, and the percent chance I think that they could be moved. The teams will be place holder and no value coming back as I'm not sure what the value will be.

I could see Addison, Rossi and other prospect available to jump up in the draft. I'm talking about a huge jump up maybe into the Top 5. We will see what happens but something has to change for this team if we want to build into true contenders.

Trades
1.
MIN
  1. 2023 1st round pick (BOS)
  2. 2023 5th round pick (TOR)
TOR
  1. Foligno, Marcus
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
Toronto seems to really want Foligno in a lot of trades as of late. Minnesota will not accept a trade back of salary unless it is a player they like long term. I'm basing this off the Greenway trade, pick swap and a 5th.
2.
LAK
  1. Addison, Calen
Additional Details:
This is more of a hockey trade. Turcotte needs a fresh start and chance at getting minutes in the NHL. Addison has produced at the NHL but doesn't fit Dean's system. I think there is risk in this trade, the Wild are giving up a guy who has produced at the NHL level in hopes Turcotte can start reaching for his ceiling. LA may added a low draft pick to even it out. This trade may not happen if Goligoski decides to waive and move to a team where he can get more minutes and games in.
3.
MIN
TOR
  1. Gustavsson, Filip
Additional Details:
I give this a 10% chance. The only reason I'm entertaining this is if he wants a ton of money that we can not afford to give him at this moment. He had a huge year and played solid all season. Nothing tells me he will regress and can't duplicate the season he just had. He would fetch a big return if we were to trade him and sign a cheap back up this year.
4.
MIN
TBL
  1. Hartman, Ryan
Additional Details:
I give this a 20% chance. I think BG is sick of Dean playing Hartman at the 1c and not giving Rossi a chance there. Hartman has out played his contract and has been huge for us. He plays injured and performs above where he should be slotted on a contending team. I hate to see him go but I can see us trying to get value for him. The return would have to be picks or a prospect due to his cap size being so small. If he were to resign at a similar cap hit, I would like to see him here long term.
5.
MIN
NYR
  1. Zuccarello, Mats
Additional Details:
I'm giving this one 25%. This one is difficult for me. Yes, he and Kaprizov have chemistry but I can't stand the passing and not shooting. Both are tremendous passers of the puck, they do not shoot the puck enough. When Zucc wants to play he can take over a game, he elevates his line mates. But when he is passive it hurts the team. He was passive when Kaprizov was out for a month, he was passive in the past 2 playoffs. Not sure the return on this one and why move him if you risk pissing Kaprizov off but at some point it's time to take over the game and that includes the playoffs.
6.
MIN
NJD
  1. Spurgeon, Jared
Additional Details:
I'm giving this one a 3%. Spurgeon is a great player and great human. He doesn't stand out to me as a leader that is vocal and hold guys accountable for bad play. He also doesn't seem like the energy guy when the boys are tired. He's been here for the Suter/Parise playoffs that didn't go well. He disappears in the playoffs too many times. He's undersized, and I only call this out because he doesn't play with an edge. He doesn't clear the net or wear the opponents down. And his offense isn't noticeable enough to play the way he does. He doesn't even QB the PP1. We've seen what he brings and people need to look at it if he might be the problem of not advancing in the playoffs. Ultimately, I would strip the C and keep him on the roster.
7.
MIN
PIT
  1. Goligoski, Alex
Additional Details:
I'm going 50% on this one. Either Addison gets moved and we keep him for the last year or he moves and we keep Addison. I understand Goligoski hasn't played the minutes he wants or maybe was even promised. His play has declined but to me, he can still play the bottom pairing and be effective. If a trade were to occur, I would see no retention and future considerations as the move. We allow him to go where he wants and thank him for his services. I will remember that first half of the first season he was with us. Great times!

1. You know that the Kings have Doughty, Roy, Walker, Durzi, Clarke, Spence and Grans all on the right side, correct? Addison MAYBE slots in above Grans in terms of the depth chart vs current development.
2. Turcotte doesn't need a fresh start, he needs health. The Kings have shown that even with only a few weeks of health, they are willing to give him NHL minutes.

Kings pass on this one, very quickly.

What would a trade for Turcotte look like to you? I'm intrigued to get a guy who might be able to help us up the middle.

Dean Evason and Bill Evason enabling him are still here. The bs with not having a country lockerroom yet no veteran besides one like fiala who pushes dean Evason bottlims ever get held responsible. I just don't get it. We have an owner who wants to sell tickets and I get it, but they talk about fair treatment, yet rookies and young players get the wrong end of the stick. Veterans like Jon merrill, and Zuccarello do no wrong. Dean Evason is a big issue

I agree, I highly question his ability to help develop the young guys and bring them up correctly. In my opinion, Kaprizov and Zucc should be able to carry a line and allow Rossi to play freely. I look at the Stars who have Johnston playing so well. Our vets don't enable the young guys and cover up for any of their mistakes. It either a player issue or coaching issue. And I lean towards coaching.

It's a coaching and don't piss off Bill Guerin or Dean Evason issues. As much I love and adore Matt dumba, as soon he pissed off Dean Evason, he was benched. Calen Addison: pissed off Dean Evason and Bill Guerin and didn't play most if not all of 2nd half of season. Boldy: criticized in media by Guerin at the end of thus season.

Fiala: traded because he clashed with Dean Evason. How often does a gm choose a coach over player? I know money played big role also, but relationships was fractured

Zuccarello & foligno: Zip! No criticism..Spurgeon: no criticism.

It's kind of sad that when you critique the coaching staff as a player on the Minnesota Twins, and now the MIN Wild, they talk about family culture and openness, but it doesn't exist

Turcotte is not available until next summer unless there is a top quality LHD coming back. The Kings don't want to sell low on him, and have no reason to do so since he's still waiver exempt. Given his injury history, no team should be willing to pay what the Kings would want for him.

You're better off waiting until next summer if you want him.

I don’t necessarily disagree with your dislike of Dean, but I think it’s more of a system thing. I also don’t think BG has unconditional love for DE…BG didn’t hire DE, he inherited him.

I certainly agree that I hate BG’s philosophy on young players, and his unwillingness to let them learn in the NHL.

I have a strong dislike for Leipold…from how he got the team, to how he dealt with Suter, and now his unwillingness to think long term!! I mean they are in cap hell (because of him) and then not allow the team to tank for top 5 picks!! WTF!!

I would love to get Turcotte!! I thought he should have been in the Fiala deal…I didn’t think BG got enough for Fiala.

For the reasons set forth by @tkecanuck341 above, I don't think that we trade him this summer, but if we did, I'd want Lambos or O'Rourke back.

Frankly, I don't think there's a world where Minnesota and the Kings are trade partners including Turcotte. His health is too variable, and I think the only way the Kings would part with him were if they were using him as the finishing piece to a much larger package. Something like what it would have taken for Chychrun.

Turcotte's value is just so hard to gauge right now, because every other team trying to acquire him will low-ball LA and and poitn to his health. But the Kings won't want to sell low on a previous #5 pick when it hasn't been a skill development problem. The kid can play. I'd argue his value is probably mid-round first (13-18OA) pick if I had to guess. But no team is going to be willing to take that chance on a kid who hasn't stayed healthy.

Fiala wasn't traded because he clashed with coaches. The Wild had no cap space and therefore everyone knew he was going to be moved. No doubt, they wanted Brock Faber which is who they targeted. The Wild would also bring Dumba back after the way he played the 2nd half (at a lower cap hit) but they have $8m to sign 8 players for next season.
