Marner and Lily to Carolina

Description
Leafs get a pending ufa d upgrade in Pesce , 3 picks and a very good young forward and cap space. Carolina get a good young D man in Lily with team control and 2 years of a super star, selke candidate winger.

Leafs spread Marners cap around to improve their top 9 and their defence.

Matthews extend 12m x 8 years
Nylander extends 8.5m x 8 years
Pesce gets offered 6.5m x 6 years and potentially extends

Could work out in the long-term but might not. I don't think this trade makes the team better now, so the risk isn't worth it.

No deal for Marner makes the Leafs better right now. They are trading the best player in every possible scenario. But are Kane, Pesce, Jarvis better than Marner and Lily? Probably not but it's close.

No trade with hurricanes makes sense for Marner; he immediately becomes their best player and we get decent but far from impact players back - no thanks. Picks are not what we need either.

Yeah, that's true but if we ignore the draft capital, the Leafs are getting the youngest player in the deal but are giving up the 2nd and 3rd youngest. I think the Leafs lose a Marner or Nylander and possibly Matthews deal and a GM may feel like it has to be done but adding Liljegren to the deal makes things worse.

Lily has to come back the other way, if I am Carolina and putting up Pesce in the deal.

Could always remove Pesce and Lily from the trade as well, but I wanted him on the Leafs :P.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect anything less from CAR especially since Marner's cap hit is so large in the 1st place, but at that point the Leafs are just trading Marner for cap space to potentially sign an adequate ufa replacement in Kane. It might benefit the Leafs but probably for no more than 4-years, could be less. That's something to consider when trading a player of Marner's caliber who would otherwise likely be a life long Leaf.
