Toronto would have to add something else. The difference between Hellebuyck and samsonov is greater than nylander and ehlers. And ehlers has an extra year
Howie liked this.

Interesting trade value wise. I’d think both teams would want extensions on expiring contracts before pulling the trigger.

I feel both teams decline as it doesn't help either team in terms of the direction they want to go

Murray's not on LTIR. I don't know how much Hellebuyck helps over Samsonov especially with the 2m cap difference. Like Ehlers but he's often injured.

Stats wise i might disagree on the whole differences argument but no doubt a fair argument. Ehlers has extra year but Sammy has RFA. I thought this is very fair for both sides value wise, question is more if either team would want to make this type of move.

Nope jets don't trade ehlers and trade helle for futures not a swap. Toronto doesn't have the right assets for helle that they would want (young team control assets with top 6 upside and a 1st) toronto doesn't have the assets to have the most appealing offer

Nylander took a huge step up this year while Ehlers had a tough year. The gap between these 2 is bigger than ever. Helly is a superior goalie but he’s never won and it’s concerning that his save % is only 1 point higher than Sammy. Not that he isn’t better or the Leafs wouldn’t like to have him but it’s hard to pay anything significant for a goalie when Aiden Hill and Brobovsky didn’t even start the playoffs. Hill could have been acquired for a mid-round pick and Bob was the worst contract in the league. Vasi was human this year. Shesterkin lost in the first round….tough to gage the value on goalies right now. It seems NHL players have figured out their tendencies.

I don't think very much of Hellebuyck but I'd assume that many around the league does so would hopefullybe , Nylander is better then Ehlers but Nylander isn't signing in Winnipeg in a year so the Jets are just making another trade before the season even ends, just not a fit for the Jets given their situation and challenges.

Agreed. And I would add the difference between Hellebucyk and Samonsonv is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay bigger than betweeen Nylander and Ehlers. The something else would be pretty big.

I'm not big on the idea of going after Hellebuyck right now. Only got a year left before what's probably going to be a massive extension at the age of 31...

Investing that much into a single goalie, a position where the margin for error is SO small, is just inadvisable to me. You need to be absolutely sure you're connecting on that homerun swing.

stats wise it's actually quite the opposite, the gap between Nylander and Ehlers far exceeds.

Not an advanced stat guy so going strictly by points, over their career Nylander is at .83 ppg and Ehlers .76 On a much better team. Nylander is better for sure. But it is close. Nylander is healthier and has piled up points the last 2 seasons (on a stacked top 6). He is also able to stay healthy.

Now, Hellebucyk is a 3x Vezina nominee, has led the league in saves above expected, and regularly faces the most high danger chances against, Samsonov is good but not in the same category as Helle.

Jets also have a stacked top 6, health is a major value deciding factor, and Nylanders stats past 2 years blow him out the water

Stats wise this season Sammy was in line with Helly, obviously I think Helly is better with larger sample size otherwise I wouldnt suggest this deal but still
