Leafs never make that trade, they don't have the cap space for 6m goalie. Corey Perry on the 3rd line is asking to be watching the playoffs from the get go.

Is Markstrom better though? He has had some stellar stretches but he's not been a great playoff performer and makes a tonne of cash for way too long. Not that I am a huge fan of Samsonov but he's younger, was better in the regular season last year and won't cost as much.

Why would Markstrom decline? He would be moving to a team that has a better chance at winning opportunity for more endorsement money.

Plays with his best friend in Calgary, just had his first kid and likely doesn't want to uproot his family, has zero connection to Toronto.

If that "endorsement" argument had any grounds every player in the league would be climbing over eachother to play for the Leafs. Obviously that's not the case

None of that means he would decline a trade to TO. Most guys want to win and at his age will not have too many more shots at it. As far as a connection to Toronto all Swedes do. in Sweden there is only 3 NHL teams Leafs, Vancouver and Colorado

Thats quite the generalization you got there.

What makes you think he has a better shot at winning in Toronto?

The fact that the Leaf's made the 2nd round this year and the Flames missed the playoffs 2 of the last 3 years to start

The Flames finished ahead of a team currently in the finals, your argument has a weak base

Exceptions don't make the rule and the west was weaker as well

Barely weaker. Calgary will probably be back in the playoffs next year. They were extremely unlucky this year

I hope they do. I always love to see the Canadian teams doing well (except for the Habs)

Lindstrom, Kronwall, and SY all shake their heads at that take.

Markstrom cost Brad Treliving his job last year. Do you really think he is going to risk his new job on him?

Sweden has always been about the Leaf's going back to Salming then Sundin. Then shifted to Colorado with Forburg and 100% is Vancouver more recently

I never commented on weather or not it was a good trade for either side Just the fact that a lot of people on this board seem to always project their personal feelings on what a player night think

You never know Brad might hold Markstrom in high regard and know something personal that might have affected his play that the public does not. You just never know what someone is thinking

Whatever you say. I just find that funny when the greatest Swede of all time has ties to an organization since 1989, helped usher in a new era of players, and is still working in the front office and helping decide the team, oddly that team isn’t even a thought lol. Not discrediting the other three you mentioned as all three teams have ties. Just a little short sighted.

Markstrom could bounce back but are you going all-in on him? Cause that’s what goaltending is — whoever you choose — you are all-in. If they struggle, your entire team struggles.

I never said the Wings don't have a place in Sweden, Have you ever been there? I have been there twice both times hockey related and speak from my personal experience

Remember Salming played for the Leaf's at a time when there was almost no Europeans in the NHL and gave them a head start in Sweden

There really aren’t a lot of better options. Hellebuyck is a good one but at what cost? Sammy is still young, will he improve? Woll as a backup is a no brainer at this point.

You only mentioned three teams, I was just adding a fourth. Fortunately I have, great place. I also have been fortunate to have a dozen or so playing buddies from juniors and minor league I got to know, as well as coaching 20 or so players for some years. Being from Michigan and a Wing fan helped me get to know them as players and people based on their upbringings. A little younger than you I’m assuming unless you’re a historian as the three big names were always Liddy, Forsberg, and Sundin.

Edit: just want to also throw out the massive respect to Salming.

I would agree I would not want to spend the assets or cap space it would take to land a goaltender that moves the needle. I also think the Woll is the future for this team

I would put Salming ahead of Sundin top 4 Swedes of all time

1. Lindstrom
2. Forsberb
3. Salming
4. Sundin
