Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Bear, Ethan [RFA Rights]
  2. Ekman-Larsson, Oliver ($3,260,000 retained)
  3. Garland, Conor ($1,950,000 retained)
  4. 2023 1st round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
The Leafs move on from Rielly, Jarnkrok and Abruzzesee in the first move to refurbish the blueline. They import Ethan Bear for the right side 2nd pairing and a discounted OEL for the left where he will likely play protected third pairing minutes and 1st PP. Additionally they grab a feisty undersized winger in Conor Garland who has underacheived in Vancouver and needs a change in scenery and their 1st rounder in 2023. Given the contracts they are absorbing and the fact that they would still need to sign Bear, the 1st is CODB here.
VAN
  1. Abruzzese, Nick
  2. Järnkrok, Calle
  3. Rielly, Morgan
Additional Details:
The Canucks get out from two of the three tickets they want out from under though it does cost them salary retention, the rights to Ethan Bear and a 1st round pick to do it. In return they get a second puckmoving defenseman who is an upgrade on OEL both in age and ability and will be a hometown favourite to boot in Rielly, a middle six winger with a 200 foot game in Jarnkrok, and an instant offense prospect to replace Kratsov in Abruzzesee.
2.
TOR
  1. Andersson, Rasmus
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (CGY)
  3. 2025 3rd round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
The Leafs get a anchor for the right side of their defense in Andersson and a pair of staggered picks but it costs them the top layer of their pipeline and a regular in Kral, Robertson, and Liljegren respectively. Voit is not someone who will help them immediately and can be sacrificed here.
CGY
  1. Král, Filip
  2. Liljegren, Timothy
  3. Robertson, Nicholas
  4. Voit, Ty
Additional Details:
The Flames, who want to get more offense and need to get cheaper, temporarily downgrade from Andersson to Liljegren who is on the same development path but younger. For that however, they pick up a replacement for Toffoli in Robertson and a replacement for Zadorov in Kral in addfition to Liljegren. All three can play for them now. The fourth piece, Voit, is an instant offense prospect not as far along who just blew up the OHL as a 19 year old.

That's too much salary retention for VAN, either knock $1.5M off OEL or no retention on Garland. I love the idea but this effectively turns Rielly into a $11M asset which is excessive. VAN wants to compete now and having $5.2M in dead cap for the next 3 years and then $3.6M the year after will make that really hard, especially since VAN has some key players due for raises soon.

Canucks decline. Too much retention for a team with little cap space. No interest in Rielly, he’s too expensive and we already have a better version of him in Hughes.

The Canucks aren’t retaining 5M for 3 years and 3.2 for an additional year while also paying a lottery 1st and solid RHD for Rielly’s contract which is already bad and will look even worse in 2 years

Agree that it’s not wise for a team like canucks to give up a high draft pick but leafs want to win yesterday. Trading our best d man hardly helps us do that. Taking on overpaid (retention helps) but underperforming players also doesn’t help - we’re worse as a team and in no better a cap position. Bear is meh & Draft pick won’t help for years; brutal for the leafs

As much as I trust Canuck fans expertise on brutal contracts - you lead the league (OEL, Myers, Boeser, Miller, Garland, etc) - Leafs are fine keeping Reilly, so we both reject this trade. Consensus !

1) Canucks are not doing that, that's a ridiculous amount of retention and it doesn't even clear cap space at the cost of losing our only option to put with Hughes
2) Morgan Reilly would absolutely not be a fan favourite in Vancouver. I know he's from here but Canucks fan do not want a defenceman that's only good on a powerplay, especially when he won't be on the powerplay
