TOR
  1. Andersson, Rasmus
Additional Details:
The Flames acquire a future version of Andersson in Liljegren, a future version of Toffoli in Robertson, and a second instant offense middle six forward in Abruzzese, all of whom can play for them now. As a bonus they get Voit who might have a better toolbox than any of them but is not as far along.

This allows them to re-set the maturation of their team with their own pipeline and the second half of the big two contracts.

As it stands the Flames do not have the horses to challenge the four teams that made the playoffs ahead of them last season. Re-trenching is the best course of action here.
CGY
  1. Abruzzese, Nick
  2. Liljegren, Timothy
  3. Robertson, Nicholas
  4. Voit, Ty
Additional Details:
Toronto imports a two way blueliner for the right side capable of playing in all situations for their cup runs but pay dearly for it.
2.
TOR
  1. Wheeler, Blake ($3,000,000 retained)
  2. 2024 1st round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
The Jets get a a do everything complimentary forward that can mesh with talent but also do well on the PK on a reasonable deal in Jarnkrok as well as a third pairing PP type to play behind Morrissey in Hollowell. More importantly, they get out from under most of Wheeler's cap hit which allows them flexiblility to re-sign other players and begin to re-make their dressing room culture.
WPG
  1. Hollowell, Mac
  2. Järnkrok, Calle
Additional Details:
The Leafs import another gritty veteran with wheels on a cup hunt to play the right side behind Nylander and Marner for half price. It's a one year gamble they can walk away from in 12 months if it doesn't work for them, but if it does... The first from the Jets is CODB given the amount the Leafs are taking on and the player risk involved in terms of fade.
3.
TOR
  1. Couturier, Sean ($1,750,000 retained)
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (CBJ)
  3. 2025 3rd round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
The Flyers get a better replacement for Provorov than the player himself and the bona fide PP quarterback Ryan Ellis was supposed to be but never was on a team friendly ticket. A pairing of Rielly/Walker allows them to shelter the blueline youth while they grow.

As insurance against Coulturier's comeback being unsuccessful, the Philly 3rd round pick in 2025 becomes a 1st if Coulturier fails to play a total of 100 games during the 2023/24 and 2024/25.seasons. Given that Toronto is in their cup window now, it would be in their best interests to keep him in the lineup when they can.
PHI
  1. Rielly, Morgan
Additional Details:
The Leafs move on from a -playoff standout in Rielly in order to change the dynamic of the team without blowing up the forwards. In return they import a point a game Selke winning pivot that allows them to slide Tavares to the left side.

True, Coulturier is coming off a major injury but all reports indicate that he is at full health now. There is a bit of salary retention and draft pick insurance built into the deal in case said health does not hold.

Flyers aren't retaining on a 7 year contract, and if they are, those picks ++ should be going the other way

This isn't bad, though I could just be saying that because I love Morgan Rielly. Though I doubt Coots or Rielly waive their NMCs.

retaining on 7 years is just never going to happen, would be the biggest retainment in NHL history.

If Lilly is a future version of Anderssen and Robertson is a future version of Toffoli, then why would we trade them?

Because our window of contention is opening now and Calgary's won't be for about three or four years when those players will be approaching their primes.

They are getting two years younger and with Walker now have a defensive pairing to hide the kids behind.

Do you think any of your current FAs to be re-sign? Do you think Andersson does in three years? Do you think the Flames win a cup in that time? Do you think they can beat out any of Vegas, Edmonton, Seattle or LA to get into the playoffs?

Those are the questions you need to be asking.

In general

Flyers just extended him, he is an elite 2-way player when healthy, and to risk a losing a first while arguably being the guy with move value in the deal is scary..

For the leafs, let’s not pretend Tavares wasn’t one of the best defensive forwards in the league before joining TOR, the system is different and his numbers reflect that. I think they could just get Tavares to play his old style and the Leafs won’t need to move one of their best puck moving D for it.

Tavares definitely has his strengths I am one of the few who have repeatedly defended his contract because I believe most overlook the off-ice value he has added to the dressing room and simply look at the stat line (which isn't bad mind you) and rip the fact that he doesn't skate like McDavid or McKinnon. I just think they will get even more out of him by using him on the wall and as the the guy in the dot when called on.

The Leafs just extended Rielly as well so tomato- tomahto right? And both clubs benefit from the deal.

Philly are rebuilding and do not want to throw the young defense to the dogs. Having a pairing of Rielly/Walker allows them to avoid that much of the time. And he is actually two years younger than Couturier.

Couturier only has more value if he is healthy. And if he is healthy the first is a third right? smile

To answer your questions:
Yes, some of the current FAs will re-sign and some will be dealt.
Andersson is in line to be the captain of this team, the Flames will pay him what he's worth.
Flames had one bad year where their goaltending was atrocious, if the goalies had played at a .900 level, they make the playoffs.
Do I think they win the cup? Odds are they don't. Do I think they can beat out division rivals in a 7 game series? Yes, there is definitely a chance of that happening.

Do you think Matthews, Marner, or Nylander re-sign? Do you think the Leafs will have stable goaltending (you are still lacking a true defensive dman)? Do you think Bunting takes that pay cut to join the Leafs when the core 4 aren't signed past two years and he can likely get a better deal as an FA?

Those are the questions you should be asking.
