The argument is that you have to give to get. With the extension (would not do this without an extension), putting MacKinnon and Dubois 1/2 in the middle would create arguable the best 1-2 Center combo in the league for the next 7 years. Combine that with the D depth and this team would be elite.

Where does Newhook fit in? I think Avs fans are hoping and wishing for a top 6 role for him, but I am not convinced and hope is not a strategy. Newhook should not be on the bottom 6 (can't PK, too unselfish and won't shoot, doesn't hit, disappeared in the playoffs, etc). I wish him the best, but he is looking like a tweener, and if you can get a Dubois type, you do it.

The contract squeezes the bottom six for a year, but there are going to be a LOT of 3rd/4th line players looking for a $1m-$2M contract on a contender as the cap squeezes everyone this year. Plus I spent a bunch of money on Barbashev, which could be used elsewhere. The cap will go up by $3M per year the following 3 years and can be used on bottom six players.

You're an OG here. Explain please. Talk me out of PLG being the perfect 2C for the next 8 years for the team. (and yes the odds of this happening are about zero, but aren't we all dreaming on players here)

I think PLD is the perfect fit at 2C for this core. My issue with this trade is the Girard for Heinola swap. This scenario where Girard is gone and that cap space is replaced with Barbashev likely costs the Avs Toews next summer and then the D core is severely lacking.

If we get PLD, I think we know that Girard or Toews is gone, but can't set ourselves up in a position where we lose both. Personally would keep all of our D this year and skip out of Barbashev. Go into next summer knowing that Toews is probably gone unless we get bad news on Landy.

I suppose after hearing your reasoning the trade sounds better. It’s still is a huge risk to trade a haul for a player and sign him for that long at that cap so we’d have to see how big of a gamble the Avs org wants to take.

I'm definitely not a "Trade Girard" guy. I also think that Barbashev is playing himself into a bigger contract than $5M a year. I will say the idea of those top 2 lines in compelling and makes the Avs scary again.

The reason I think it isn’t good is you create 2 holes to fill one. I am admittedly probably higher on Newhook than most and think he has 60pt potential, which is what PLD. Love or hate Girard he is a top 4 dman cost controlled for 4 more seasons, and if you give PLD $8.5M Toews is good as gone so in a season you could be counting on Manson to not only be a top 4 guy but a top 3 guy. Hopping back to Newhook say he doesn’t become a 2C at worst he’s a cost controlled asset to drive scoring on the 3rd line where you have no real center prospects in the pipeline (imo Foudy is better suited at wing). The final part imo is the stickiest, what happens when (if) Landeskog comes back? You just added a ton of cap but Mikko and Makar will be coming due in a short time what happens then, if it is will worry about it then ok. But ultimately for me PLD is 25 and has now asked to be traded from 2 different franchises, and while that’s his right how he stopped trying particularly in CBJ is very bothersome.

Cheers for that. FWIW, I will never be a "trade Girard" guy. I love him as a 4/5 D-man. I am enamoured with the idea of a legit 1C/2C scenario. I hoped that with PLD in a comfortable spot, it would bring the best out of him.

All that said, the 2C spot seems to the thing that defines this current team construction, and I agree, it is swapping problems. I will be curious to see how it plays out.
