Quoting: Just_A_Guess
He's included in the trade as we would be upgrading from him to PLD? That's the point of the trade... we swap players and pay the difference?
PLD said he isn't resigning, so WPG has to move him. You saw what CGY got for Tkachuk, and it's somewhat similar situation. Clearly Tkachuk is better at this point than PLD and would be 1 or 2 OA in that class now, but PLD was still #3 in a good draft class (could even argue he'd go 3OA in a redraft), and for some reason, I feel like he has said or there've been rumors for awhile he'd prefer to go to MTL.
This trade is contingent on MTL actually valuing him highly and wanting to maximize their roster. From it's construction, it looks like they are not rebuilding. Anyway, Habs are always a team looking to win. So, right now, hands down, PLD is a better player than whoever you get 5OA. So the player wants to go there and, on paper, it looks like a good fit on their roster.
Going from 5 to 18 is tough for MTL but you can still get a good player at 18 in a good class.
The Jets are also a team that doesn't want to suck any time soon. They have a strange make up and are about to transition to a younger core group. Wheeler, Sheifele, Hellebuyck, all potentially gone this year. Some of their D too. But they're trying to actively get younger while staying competitive and maximize return for veteran assets. PLD wants out. You have to imagine, him being a quality, established NHLer who hasn't hit his ceiling and was 3OA in a good class, WPG will demand a 1st rd pick in this draft, no matter how high it is.
Dvorak coming back for WPG, it fits the positional need of a gap at C for WPG and clears some cap for MTL which they need. That's why you include Hoffman too, they need to shed, and WPG needs short term help to stay competitive. MTL on the other hand, has MSL army guys like Harvey-Pinard, Ylonen, Belzille, and others, to fill roster spots at fractions of the cost. Funnily enough, they need the great young player less than WPG does.
