Leafs aren’t moving Marner so there’s that - but why would Arizona do this? Trading younger players (not as good as Marner admittedly) under team control for 4/5 years for 2 years of Marner - zero chance he’d re sign

I think the only way the Leafs deal Marner is if Matthews doesn’t want to stay. I think if you deal away Matthews best friend and favourite linemate it gives him a reason to want to leave. For that reason I’d keep Marner. Plus I think the fact he’s decent on the PK adds value to him beyond just points.

I think they would want to keep Marner if Matthews wanted out. This trade doesn’t happen but Keller is Matthews' friend as well but that being said, I don't think you deal Marner unless you're trying to get rid of Matthews but want it to come from him.

Ya that’s fair enough. I just cant envision anyone wanting to go to Arizona to play right now. You’d have to think any team trading for a superstar like matthews would only do so if they had an extension in place. Even though it’s his hometown you’d be agreeing to play in front of 5,000 people on a terrible team. For those reasons I don’t see it as a possibility. But stranger things have happened

Maybe he would do it on a 3-year deal at 20% of the cap 😂. 50.1M over 3-years should be a good incentive.
