Move down on Draft Day

Created by: Mac11
Team: 2023-24 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 12, 2023
Published: Jun. 12, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If the Sharks decide to take the risk on Michkov, I see an opportunity to capitalize on another teams desperation to move up for one of the top 4 centers in this draft. With Michkov's floor likely being 8 to Washington, that leaves Arizona and Philly as the best options to move down, especially considering the future assets that they posses. Both teams could be looking to add a marquee center to their rebuilds while the Sharks gain assets and hope the Reinbacher to Montreal rumors are true.
Plus a Karlsson trade because why not. The extra cap space the Sharks free up could be weaponized to add even more draft assets. I hear Toronto has a goalie they are trying to get rid of....

Feel free to roast me for any of these, but please include why you feel the way you do and what type of counter offer you might make. Genuinely curious what other team's fans think about this draft and for Detroit, if Karlsson retained is a piece that would be interesting to you (assuming he would waive his NMC)

Edit: Should have clarified that the first two trades are one or the other. Both would be the deal to move up from 6 (AZ) or 7 (Philly) to #4 to select whichever of Carlsson or Smith is still there.
Trades
1.
SJS
  1. 2023 1st round pick (ARI)
  2. 2023 1st round pick (OTT)
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (MTL)
ARI
  1. Simek, Radim
  2. 2023 1st round pick (NJD)
  3. 2023 1st round pick (SJS)
Additional Details:
Double first round pick swap this year and an extra second going to the sharks for the quality of the #4 pick this year. Move out Simek to clear the logjam of LD and help Coyotes reach the floor.
2.
SJS
  1. 2023 1st round pick (LAK)
  2. 2023 1st round pick (PHI)
  3. 2024 1st round pick (FLA)
PHI
Same double first swap but with both picks being lower than the Coyotes, the pick next year turns this into the Panthers first instead of a second.
    3.
    SJS
    1. 2023 1st round pick (NYI)
    2. 2023 2nd round pick (DET)
    3. 2024 1st round pick (BOS)
    4. 2024 2nd round pick (DET)
    Additional Details:
This falls short of Grier's reported asking price of 3 firsts and with more retention than he wanted, but two firsts and two seconds would certainly help him stockpile the prospect pool after years of being in the bottom third of the league.
Assuming EK waives his NMC to be the final piece of the Yzerplan rebuild.
    DET
    1. Karlsson, Erik ($3,500,000 retained)
    Additional Details:
Detroit is already on the rise and in this trade, SJ targets futures, leaving Detroit's prospect pool intact while keeping the chance to add one more premium piece at #9 this year.

Red wings pass, not close to anything they would even consider

Yzerman would be foolish to do that. He drafts very well. I'd hate to see who we could've drafted with those picks. We're far away from ending the rebuild. I'm all for making an impactful trade but this isn't it.

Detroit doesn't even take that call. Insanely hard pass in fit. Look elsewhere.

What is closer then? Offensive RD looked like a need especially following the Hronek trade and Detroit seems primed for taking a swing this offseason. Is Karlsson of no interest at all or is a mid first, early second and two picks next year just too much?

Karlsson's age fits horribly with Detroit's timeline.
His age is only fit for current contenders, but his price isn't.

I’m assuming flyers give up 3 first round picks to move up to 6 and 10? No thanks I’d rather just keep ours 1st

    This to say;
All the teams who can afford to trade for him aren't in a position to win now.

All of the teams who are in position to win now can't afford to trade for him unless
    A) San Jose is willing to retain a LOT, which I doubt they are
    and/or
    B) San Jose takes less than what he's worth since there is like no team who both should and could afford to pay for EK retained highly.

His age, contract and fit is all the issue. We wouldn't be oayita mid 30s player 8.5M+ to play 2nd pair minutes on a team on the cusp of making the playoffs..just makes no sense to give up those futures for a player that doesn't work for them. He's also only had 1 good year in 4, so it's not a move Yzerman considering after not wanting to pay someone 10 years younger then him 6M+ to play 2nd pair

I'd much rather have 6 and 12 and a decent second next year than 4 and 26. It's not even close in my mind.

4 & 26. That is what I meant by double pick swap this year

Karlsson just isn't a fit in Detroit. He doesn't fit our timeline. Unless you want to give him to us far below market value, where we can move him at the deadline for an asset net gain, you're better off finding a different trade partner for him.

So 4 and 26 for 7 22 and FLA next year which will also probably be between 20-25. Yeah I’d rather just keep the picks instead of moving up 4 spots to give up all of that
