We're looking for pick swaps up and 1sts/2nds to take on bad contracts, not 3rd/4ths.

Mantha is 5.7 cap/6.5 salary for a guy who might play 65 games and might put up 25 points. Caps need to put a 2nd round pick on the table to make Mantha go away. It can be a future 2nd or it can be this years getting offset by a 3rd from the Hawks to make the value of the 2nd more of a mid than the #40OA, but it isn't going to be for late 3rds and a future 4th.

My counter offer would be #40OA + Mantha for #93OA (I would consider #67OA....but not until exhausting all other options) which puts the value of the pick difference right at what the Hawks took for Zaitsev of #44OA (minus the future 4th which I can justify as taking the 1/4er of a season extra of Zaitsev post TDL). Another option might be sending back a RFA D like MItchell or Caleb Jones in place of the 3rd round pick. Opens roster spot for the Hawks to audition kids and gives the Caps a bottom roster depth piece (presumably trading Mantha is to add a siginificant player as an attempt to be a playoff team as a retool....or they just buy him out or play out his last year)

CHI probably declines. But that proposal is much better than the ones that assume anyone would pay for Mantha.
