Extreme Cap Weaponization

Created by: Orionus
Team: 2023-24 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 12, 2023
Published: Jun. 13, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This mock assumes three things:

1. The Hawks definitely want to tank next year.
2. The Hawks don't want Korchinski in the NHL next year.
3. The Hawks intend to move aggressively in the 2024 FA class.

The opportunity of having 1/11/14/28 in the draft is a dream scenario for the Hawks, and they can effectively single-handedly save three contenders from cap hell while not burning any additional retention spots.

Brodie, TyJo, and Dickinson all become potential deadline moves with retention.

Personally, I like these moves. But, there will likely be dissent from both CHI's fanbase as well as the fans of the other teams involved. I also agree with your understanding of CHI's approach to next season.

From your description, I agree with assumptions 1 & 2. I am not sure I agree with 3. It would be year 3 of the rebuild & I think they probably wait to year 5 to be aggressive in free agency, unless the kids all develop super quick, then a case could be made for year 4. I am interested in others view on this

The issue I have is that we are acquiring Petry, Myers, & Brodie (while sending out Murphy). But we just added 2 more bodies in front of our young defensemen.

Not on board with just giving Murphy away in the Leafs deal. If that's the cost, Hawks can do without pick #28.

Myers & Brodie are 1 year deals. If the Hawks want to bring someone up, they can always just bury/buy-out as needed.

Have fun - enjoy your draft pick who might be in the NHL for Sid and Gene's 37 and 38 y/o seasons.

LMAO, Petry although a tad overpaid isn't a cap dump and the 14th pick can be used in so many other ways that benifit the pens rather than dumping Granlund and Petry for the return of a 3rd

Petry and Myers are RHD. We don't really have any RHD on the way any time soon, other than maybe Regula. But, I doubt they think he is ready yet. Mitchell is probably on the outs. Crevier needs more time. Rinzel is a long way away. Krutil probably never gets a contract and Kelley isn't likely to be signed until next summer. I wouldn't trust any of our LHD prospects to just hop into the NHL and play the right side, either. Also, they probably only bring up two prospect defensemen at a time next year. Others will get looks, but there is plenty of space for next season, and then the season after that we will have plenty more space opening up.

Well, if there is a time to dip into free agency, it is next summer. The UFA class is VERY good and a lot of the best players are the right age for CHI, just barely being 26. That way they still have quite a few years in the NHL ahead of them. Wouldn't be surprised to see at least one large acquisition next summer.
