Toronto can’t fit JT under the cap and shouldn’t try.

That was not the question what would it take to get him.

Idk. I'd take him if the Canucks retained ~3mil and gave us the 11th overall pick or something.

But otherwise that is a DO NOT TOUCH contract

There isn't a cost that makes sense. His contract is horrible and moving it will cost the Canucks more that it's worth.

The ask is 2 1sts and a top prospect (at least that is what was reported at the trade deadline)

The reality he likely stays in Vancouver. If traded it's to Pittsburgh/Washington where they can deal with the high cap in a few years while rebuilding.

To the Leafs. Unless it's 50% retained there is no value.

At 50% retained I'd do a 1st, Lili and Laf or something along those lines.

And then what? TO is on the hook to pay him his full contract until he's 38? Absolutely not. His contract is one of the worst out there.

Miller was good, he's going only get worse and is getting paid for what he did in his prime.

I believe the reports at the TDL were Miller to Pit for 2 1sts and Zucker. Zucker wouldn’t waive for Vancouver and they couldn’t find a 3rd team to reroute him to.

In reality, there’s no real way a deal works. He’s too expensive for Toronto, both in contract value and in acquisition cost.

Truth is Vancouver massively overvalues him.

And they have to, they pretty much destroyed the franchise over him. His contract is the reason their captain has to be traded, lowballling Horbat had a knock on effect that tanked their season this year, led to the media turning on the, the whole fiasco with Bruce.

To management there he was to either be their #1LW or a star #2C or fetch a king's ransom at this point.

Otherwise they will look like idiots for not getting a 1st and top prospect for him when he has 1 year left, resigning Horvat (likely for cheaper) and realistically being a better team for it.

Hard to say, I don’t even think Vancouver knows what they are doing. Sign JT, trade Horvat, trade a 1st + for Hronek, sell Schenn for a 3rd, buyout OEL…I don’t think they know if they are buying or selling.

Horvat wanted to bet on himself, that's why VAN didn't sign him.

If Van were to trade him to TOR it would probably be for Liljegren + a 2023 first, + ideally (not necessarily) a 2nd/medium prospect. If I was TOR I wouldn't touch that package at all though

And people have JT as one of the top buyout candidates right now.

So what does that say about Miller?

Who has JT as a top buyout candidate???

Also, that he wouldn't be worth 11 is my guess

If you check the popular buyouts tab here on the main CF page, he lands there frequently. Last I saw was about 2 days ago.

And yes. Tavares is literally projected value for this season at 11.1 million.

Tavares does SO much more than Miller it isnt funny

The Athletic model alone is not enough to evaluate players. If it was then Jalen Chatfield would be an 8 million dollar player

It kind of turned out well for them though, so far at least. They got a 1st+top prospect and a roster player out of Horvat instead, and turned the pick into a top 4 RD. Maybe, they would have saved 1-1.5M on the guy who is 2-years younger but I don't think they would have been able to get Hronek. Vancouver might have not made the playoffs either way, at least now they have a high pick in a deep draft. They can salvage the situation without dealing Miller but let's see if they do lol.
