Probably Still Bad

Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 17, 2023
Published: Jun. 17, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Patience is key. Look for growth from Seider, Raymond, and Berggren. See if Kasper, Soderblom, and Mazur can stick in the NHL, and give Johansson a shot out of camp. Once Edvinsson is healthy, see if he can stick. McIsaac either makes the team or goes on waivers.
Schenn for a bit more size and snarl on the blueline, and Korpisalo as a stopgap until Cossa is ready.
Maximum cap flexibility around the trade deadline. If the team looks good, plenty of space and assets to add. If they look bad, tons of space to facilitate trades and take bad contracts.

Cap dump. Probably not needed with the OEL buyout, but would give additional flexibility if Allvin is looking to make big moves

This would be a depressing off-season but I think it's about what happens. No bold moves, more wait and see and us talking about Celebrini and Eiserman for the next year .

Agreed. Seems like a bunch of decent defencemen next draft as well.

Yeah but that would require some lottery luck.

Schenn is apparently re-signing with the Leafs.

Even the fans of a rebuilder should not be subject to a second pair of Chiarot Myers

Chiarot will play the right side next season so that wouldn't happen. I doubt Yzerman is interested in taking on a 6 million cap dump for only a 4th when we got a 2nd for Marc Staal who was cheaper.

Main thing I'm worried about is that the Wings pay for someone like DeBrincat or Konecny, then the season goes off the rails and the player wants out, like what's happening in Ottawa. Besides, picks 9 and 17 this year could potentially fill some of the existing holes in the roster. Take stock for another season, and if the Wings are either in or on the cusp of the playoffs, make a big splash. Try to bring in Keller, or go big game hunting in FA, that sort of thing.

Last I saw they weren't particularly close on a deal. Not a make-or-break move for the offseason, just thought upgrading the bottom pairing would be good.

Circumstances were a little different then. Rangers needed to shed cap, and Vancouver doesn't at the moment. Myers isn't great, but he'd fit a position of need at least for the season. If he's bad, he walks. Low risk, low reward. Also not a necessary move, but could be beneficial for both teams.

I totally agree about trading those picks. I also think Berggren, given more opportunity, can score 25 which will be similar production to Debrincat for alot cheaper. I don't think it's worth trading for any forward with what we have coming up. Only player I would trade a first for is Pesce. My hope for those two firsts this year are Leanord/ Moore at 9 and Willander or Barlow at 17.

Agreed. Berggren's defensive game needs some polish, but the offensive skills are definitely there. Given better linemates and more ice time, 20 goals/40 points is likely in the cards for him.
I'm also concerned that DeBrincat wouldn't score 40 in Detroit. Team lacks high quality playmakers, and he'd be easier to isolate. Maybe he can score 30 on his own, but that's more risk than I'd want to take.
As far as Pesce, I'd love to add him, but I doubt Carolina would be willing to trade him for anything reasonable. He's a FA after next season, will be 29 and looking for a hefty payday. Might be worth pursuing.

I'm hoping for Moore at 9 and Sandin-Pellikka at 17, which probably won't happen. Would be fine with Leonard, Willander or Barlow though. This draft should be a good one.
