Next Year Roster Prediction

Created by: Bruhimi
Team: 2023-24 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: May 25, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Backlund, Tofolli, and Lindholm all extended.

Backlund finally becomes captain.

The Hanifin trade (we know he's not extending so he is out) is a weird one. I used the Sabre's because Power is slotted as LD/RD to play both sides and I think they make a great trading partner in this case. Let me know what you think Sabre fans.

Totally forgot to add that part on my end, but yes that would include an extension.

I think Hanifin goes to either Pittsburg or Toronto, Buffalo already has Power and Dahlin in LHD

Dahlin plays the right side. I dont think they care about left vs right. Especially since he used to play for Granato.

Just what Toronto needs, another LHD. She me one will give you decent value but it'll won't be buffalo.

Dahlin plays the right because they have too many top 4 lefties.

No he plays there because he's more comfortable there

He and samuelsson can both play the right side, but when they play together they like Dahlin on the right.

They like Dahlin with Samuelson and he can play the right side but he played left with frolunda and the sabres to start his career and was moved to the right out of necessity.

Having all 4 of your top 4 Dmen being left hand shots isn't optimal. It would also mean splitting up Dahlin and Samuelsson or shifting one of Hanafin or Power to the right side.

Sabres could certainly use a good top 4 rhd and should consider moving jokiharju out in the deal.

Wasting Krebs and a valuable first on another lhd shouldn't even be considered. Unless they naturally play that side.

He actually played both sides in Frolunda. Should they have an all lefty top 4? Absolutely not, no argument there. But I just don't think they care. Hanifin used to play for Granato and they won't look past that. If they were willing to given up multiple picks to get Jordan Greenway for that reason, I don't see why this would be any different.

Edit: They also tried trading for Jakob Chyrchrun, another lefty.

Would have been a horrible idea. Chychrun toted as an RD but he is horrible on that side.

Why would buffalo move Krebs and the 13th pick to cause chaos on the blueline? They already have to #1 lhd and a solid defensive top 4 guy who's a lefty. Then they joki playing the left side, it's madness already lol.

Couple of decent ufa righties and for the price you're paying you could probably shake something pretty good lose from a different team.

Again, you dont have to sell me on it. But the idea that a team missing the playoffs 13 years running isnt going to make a series of blunders is also kind of lost on me lol.

I think they eventually get priced out of hanifin anyways, but their interest in him would not surprise me given his connection to the head coach and their propensity for being not bright.

No more room for blunders. Target dumba in ufa or the better fit would be Pesce in trade. Not many teams can outbid the sabres. They are stocked with picks and great prospects.

No man, Dahlin play on RD because it’s convenient for him there, he said it himself, plus it’s easier for him to attack there. Adams and Granato have already said that it does not matter for them whether the defenseman is left-handed or right-handed, the main quality. Adams tried to trade for Chychrun and we would have four left-handers in the top 4.

Not sure why there's so much discussion over why Dahlin plays on the right. He doesn't exclusively play there, if you watch him and Samuelsson together they shift sides pretty regularly. Dahlin said he's able to produce more offensively from the right side, and often times will shift sides on the fly depending on how he reads the other teams defense. He works well with Samuelsson because Sammy is able to read what Dahlin is doing and adjust. This is where other partners for Dahlin have generally failed, they have trouble reading and adjusting to Dahlins play.

As for Hanifin including an extension, that can't happen with the 23 1st since Hanifin can't sign an extension until July 1st which is after the draft.
