i'd rather give dumba 2 years and more AAV. that way, we have more flexibility for the quinn and peterka extensions.

Correct move is probably to just not sign dumba

Caps pass. Jost does nothing for them and the 2nd is more important.

That's a fair point. Am just thinking of the developmental gap right now and the d-men they have in the pipeline are probably three years away from having an impact (or at least holding their own) at the NHL level. Save for maybe Johnson. In his case I can see a full season in Rochester followed by either an AHL/NHL split or a year-plus on Buffalo's bottom pairing.

As for Quinn and Peterka, I think they'll bridge at least one of them, possibly both. Perhaps two or three years but it's dependent upon how they perform.

Dumba is the best RHD available with Mayfield
They both will get overpaid and will get long terms contract

Maybe. I see him as a good mentor for Power. He's also minute-eating RHD who can play in all situations. Might be a lacking on the defensive side of things but he's not a black hole. Dumba's also big and physical.

    Am interested in your counter.

The larger problem is his overall value/wins added keeps getting worse each year. And its unlikely to bounce back at his age.

It has to be either Pesce, Tanev or Demelo or they are thoroughly unserious about winning next year.

    Fair enough.

Just to clarify, it's a drop of five spots in the second round.

Who wouldn't want Pesce? Tanev too. But we'll see if Pesce re-signs and what Calgary ends up doing moving forward.

Not so sure your suggestion that DeMelo is much better than Dumba rings true to me. Although DeMelo's more of a pure defensive defenseman, which I have no problem acquiring, he hasn't faced the competition that Dumba faced on a nightly basis. We're talking the difference between more of a 2/3 in Dumba and a 4/5 in DeMelo, which is big in my book.

The quality of competition numbers for demelo and dumba are actually very similar.

Jost was waived in November and considering his QO would be 2.25M, is he even going to be qualified? I don't think he's worth more than the 2024 5th you have the Caps giving up, let alone the 5 spot difference between the 2nds.

If you don't need him, that's one thing, but making a big deal out of a five-spot drop in the second round is kinda ludicrous. Most of the players in the 39-50 range are in the same tier, it's more a matter of what flavor a specific team is looking for.

I'm not. In looking at Natural stat trick metrics from last season, Dumba took more d-zone faceoffs than DeMelo--about 57-51%--and NHL.com has Dumba with average evtoi of about 18 mins compared to 15 mins for DeMelo.

Not sure how this would add up to equal ev quality of competition. But, I guess it is what it is.

extra dzone faceoffs doesnt equate to tougher competition. I know based on whats said out of WPG by those that regularly cover the team, that demelo is the guy they send out their to face the other teams top line.

Don't get me wrong, I like DeMelo and think he'd be a fine add to the Sabres. But I really have no problem adding Dumba, who wouldn't cost any assets either.

    All good.

I don't think a 5 pick drop is a big deal, I just think Jost has literally 0 value. If the Caps are giving up a 5th and moving down 5 spots, they need to be getting something back in return, and Jost is nothing.
