crazy idea

Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 20, 2023
Published: Jun. 20, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Focused on Speed and Size (Yes I know O'Reilly is not quick but overall that was the focus).

This team does worse in the regular season but come playoffs guys like Wilson + Anderson would be a pain. They are both huge. Anderson is also extremely fast. I don't love his contract though.

Mikheyev is also very big and fast. I miss him. Does Van make this deal? They have too much cap in wingers, so I can see this making sense.

The first round pick in the Washington trade is the 8th overall.

Thoughts? I have a feeling I am about to get flamed super hard.

I didn't want him gone in the first place. I wanted him back at 3.5m x 5 years. But Van offered him much more.

He is one of the fastest and strongest players in the league. He would create at least 1 straight break away by himself each game. I am not exaggerating. His cap is steep though.

I mean Marner is pretty darn fast. Plays in all situations responsible player. Is MTL looking to move out Anderson?

No they aren't, other fan bases see him as a cap dump but really he is the type of player every fan base hates until he plays for their team

Caps couldnt fit marner in with their cap. Seems like a reasonable trade though. I dont think the caps are trading the 8th

Yea the only reason I am trading Marner is because I see the Leafs main problem as having 3 guys making over 33m. You keep Matthews if he is willing to extend. You can't move Tavares. So Marner is the only option. Need to redistribute his cap elsewhere.

I love Marner though, so it would hurt to move him.

Granted, I did not treat him as a cap dump here. I didn't value him highly but something on the lines of a late 2nd. His cap hit is very steep.

Fair! I figured they should trade one or 2 of Beauvillier, Mikheyev or Garland.

So remove Mikheyev from that list?

Assuming he plays at all. He's only played one full season in the NHL. He generally grades out as a 0.5 PPG player or worse. That's not worth the big cap hit and long-term deal he has. Montreal doesn't have to move him since they have cap room, but it's not like he's an asset. And he's 29, he is who he is. He'll probably only get slower too.

Canucks won't move Mikheyev, especially for that. He fit perfectly alongside Petey and Kuzmenko earlier in the season and he brings speed and PK ability, two things that the Canucks are in major need of.

His cap hit is about average for players who score 20-30 goals per year, even those who don't put up a ton of assists, would it be better if he was .5-1 mil lower of course but you are not going to find too many guys putting up 20+ goals getting paid less than 4 mil unless they are on an ELC or bridge deal.

What do you consider playing a whole season? If you mean 82 games, do you know how many players actually play a whole season? That's a ridiculously lofty goal, in 2022-23 only 116 players played 82 games, in a league with around 1300 players you are talking about less than 10%. If you are talking about playing more than 80% of a season (69 games in a normal 82 game season which is a more realistic definition) then Anderson has played full seasons since coming to Montreal (52 of 56, 69 of 76 and 69 of 82) in fact over the last 5 years the only season where he has not played 80% of a season was the year he separated his shoulder and needed surgery and only played 26 games. Mathews must be injury prone too and you are probably going to want to move on from him soon cause he has only played 1 full season since coming into the league. I see this comment a lot about Anderson and it's ridiculously overblown. Once in the last 5 years he misses almost a full season for surgery and all of a sudden he is injury prone, yet every other year he plays a minimum of 80% of the games, there aren't a lot of players around that play full seasons year in and year out. The players who scare GM's are the ones like Monahan where they continually mis more than 40% of a season not the ones who play 80% +!

Wingers ranked most likely to get traded to least like:
1. Garland
2. Boeser
3. Beauvillier
4. Mikheyev
5. Kuzmenko

Mikheyev has never been on the Canucks trade block
