Hofer will probably get pulled up next year but if he doesn't, murray and binnington can play in tandem. Seems like leafs fans want to shake up their D core and a brodie-faulk swap does that. Faulk is younger and should revert back to his carolina production with reilly next to him. Scandella adds depth for the leafs to trade away another piece (STL can retain money on scandella too if needed). Brodie can fill in faulk's minutes with the blues and give us financial flexibility in the coming years.

Leafs get a defensive upgrade without cap implications and blues get flexibility and placeholders for 1 year.

Leafs get a worse defensive defenceman, take on much more long term cap, and move down in the draft? Gross

Blues might get rid of one guy but doubt two. This trade isn't remotely close to value either from Toronto's end. Taking Murray is the trade up value pretty much. So TJ Brodie for Faulk AND Scandella? No. I don't even think Brodie could go for one or the other.
