I think they're a guy like Hall or Cat away from pushing for a playoff spot. This keeps their assets by avoiding a Cat trade and cap space ($3M for Hall vs $9M for Cat). Allows them to get another free agent (Kane?) to push them over the edge or even make the trade for Cat still.

Detroit isn't moving the #17 pick for an aging Taylor Hall. Reportedly Yzerman won't give it up for Alex Debrincat. So he's definitely not giving it up for Taylor Hall.

I think Davidson and management fully expect Taylor Hall to play games for us this year. He will bring excitement and jersey sales while mentoring Bedard for a little bit and giving him someone to feed off of on the ice, and then we'll probably flip him at the deadline this year or next year.
