Something Different

Created by: tkecanuck341
Team: 2023-24 Los Angeles Kings
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 26, 2023
Published: Jun. 26, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A lot of overpayments out there for PLD right now. This would give Winnipeg the big return they want, but require them to retain $3M on Hellebuyck for 4 years.

Hellebuyck signs 4 year extension @ $9M. Winnipeg retains 33% of the last year of current contract and the extension.

PLD signs his QO for 1 season, then extends on January 1 to something longer term.

I think this would kill it. Both Hellebuyck says no to 4-years and Jets say no to paying him for 5 years.

That's the only thing that gets them Byfield, Vilardi, and a 1st for two guys that are leaving anyway.

No chance of the Jets doing the retention on the Helle extension, not sure they'll be willing to retain on his final year either to be honest, they're not a well run organization and the owner likely isn't willing to eat money for a guy that isn't playing for him.

Fair enough. Just floating the idea.

As it stands, I don't see the Kings paying Vilardi + Iafallo for PLD's rights.

How's that different from the last two seasons of Kings hockey?

I hear ya. There are no deals that satisfy Hellebuyck’s contract demands and Jets trade demands that don’t neuter the acquiring team. My guess: Helly plays out his year in Winnipeg and moves next summer via free agency.

It does seem to be the most likely scenario.

I hear ya, Duchois to LA just makes no sense imo.

Crazy to think the Jets retain that long and at 33% for a goalie sold to a few places easily without any retention and good assets

First off, There's absolutely no chance of Hellebuyck taking 4 years @ $9,000,000 per. And Winnipeg isn't retaining 33% on him for 5 years that's totally delusional. If LA can't afford him at 4 years $36,000,000 then they have no business even going after him.

I think that stuff is overrated.

Face-punchers can be found for cheap. Hitting hard has little impact on wins….if anything, hits just tell us which team possesses the puck less. Grit can come from anywhere at right time.

I don't disagree. Just trying to build a trade that makes sense, because zero of the rumors out there surrounding LA & Winnipeg right now make sense.

I think McDavid and Draisaitl had something to do with it too.

So they can get a 1st round pick, two top quality long-term players in Byfield and Vilardi, as well as a top quality short-term asset in Arvidsson.

The Kings are unlikely to give up even one of these assets for PLD on his own.
