Getting Back to 3 Scoring Lines

Created by: skoguins
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 27, 2023
Published: Jun. 27, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Granlund is a play maker with no scoring ability. Give him a scoring winger to maximize his skill set and get 3rd line scoring.

Rather have Jarry on a short-term prove it deal than overpay for a FA. This lets Jarry cash in when the cap goes up in a few years if he earns it. Get him a better back up. MAF would be fun but I'd also take any of the older FAs on a cheap 1 year deal.

Someone's got to replace Zucker in the top 6. Dubas brings in a familiar face.

PIT
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (CHI)
  2. 2023 4th round pick (CHI)
CHI
  1. Pickering, Owen
Additional Details:
He's not going to contribute to the Crosby era, so move him for trade assets. Could be a part of the rebuild in CHI.
3.
PIT
  1. Addison, Calen [RFA Rights]
  2. Fleury, Marc-André
Additional Details:
Going off of LeBrun's comments that the Wild might be interested in a 2nd for Addison. Fleury is a throw-in - would be just as happy signing another FA backup goalie.
MIN
  1. DeSmith, Casey
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (CHI)
  3. 2023 4th round pick (CHI)
Additional Details:
DeSmith traded here or elsewhere for whatever they can get for him...
4.
PIT
  1. Kulak, Brett
Additional Details:
Is EDM still up against the cap? Try to take advantage of their cap situation.

CHI declines both. They are well stocked with young LHD and they already did the Jan Rutta thing.

The Rutta trade is to FLA, not CHI, but fair enough on the Pickering trade.

Pickering shouldn’t be sent away for basically nothing.

I'm a bit confused on the Pickering trade? You said you're trading him because he won't be part of the Crosby era - but you're trading him for picks who wont be part of the Crosby era.

Not sure I'm sold on that Wild trade. You're giving up assets and paying a lot of money for a 3rd pair dman and backup goalie imo

I flipped the picks for Addison who can contribute to this era. The trade basically becomes Pickering for Addison and MAF. And I guess I see Addison as a contributor on the 2nd PP and as someone who can maybe grow into a Top 4 role. He's only 23 so he can contribute at the NHL level now but also hasn't necessarily peaked yet.

You did - I just think if you want Addison, you could get him with the picks the Pens already have. Don't need to dump Pickering. Pickering + Desmith for Addison and MAF. 1.8mil vs 7.6mil. You could just keep Desmith and Pickering and have 5.8mil in cap space. Seems like a better option to me.

I have no issues if you want to get Addison though - I just think it could have been handled a little better. If you want him, just trade for him directly using the picks the Pens already have. That's all I'm trying to say. No reason to dump Pickering and then add assets and cap hit to go from Desmith to MAF. Just the way I'm looking at it
