I cant wait for Willy and Matthews to sign

Description
Making Karlsson fit isn't as hard as I thought it would be. SJ fans will say it's not fair and I would be willing to add Niemela if I had to but you are going to have to take back cap and 2 expiring contracts are way better than longer term bad cap. That's happening where ever he goes but getting a 1st and good young defenceman in Liljegren is a decent return. Plus whatever you get for moving Brodie.

  1. Karlsson, Erik ($4,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Brodie could be flipped at the deadline for at least a 2nd, likely a 1st if he stays healthy. He's absolutely still a top 4 defenceman. I just think TO needs some more meat on the blueline.

4 million retained, 2 cap dumps one being a goalie that we obviously don’t need. Pass. Not even close. NEXT

I know Karlsson is coming off a 101 point season but I wish just there was a liiiiittle bit of a consideration towards the 5 year trend before it.

When he had a broken thumb, two groin surgeries and a broken foot? Yeah he struggled through all that as would anyone else. I would like to one day see an intelligent comment from a Leaves fan.

Its an easy no. We need futures not rotting skeleton has-beens for the the reigning Norris winner.

For the Karlsson Trade - The Leafs would definitely need to add additional prospects and/or picks for $4mm x 4 years of salary retention. Likely Niemela and one of Robertson/Minten or an additional 1st round pick.
For the Zadorov Trade - Big physical defense will earn a premium. A third is not enough. The Flames could hold him until the deadline and get a late first or 2nd + prospect for Big Z.

Flames not trading big Z, especially for a measly 3rd.

You are hoping for 200% more than you'll get. No contender can afford Karlsson at this full cap. End of story. So you are retaining and taking salary back. 2 guys with 1 year term you can flip is the best case scenario. Other teams will want you to take guys with term. Good luck

Toffoli got a middle 6 winger and a 3rd. You think big Z is going to get more? Get real

I would be willing to add Niemela for Karlsson but the retention is going to happen. You aren't moving Karlsson without retention and taking cap back. It's just not possible without.

As for Z, he's a 3rd pair defender he isn't getting a 2nd let alone a 1st. Toffoli just got a middle six winger and a 3rd. You think Z is getting more? Or the same even? Not likely

You know Brodie is younger than Karlsson right? You are hopelessly optimistic on getting a major return for a guy who's already 33 and makes 11.5 million. You will have to retain a fair amount and take back cap it's a foregone conclusion. He's healthy now and had a great season but his health has been an issue in the past so his contract holds a tonne of risk. It's not going to be as good of a return as you want. That is clear.

He's getting traded, SJ will retain some cap and they will have to take back cap. These are all necessities to make the trade happen. Your best option will be which team offers the best cap coming back. Because some teams are going to want you to take some really bad contracts back in return. Because it's the only way a contender can afford Karlsson.

Oh it's certainly a risky acquisition but a healthy Karlsson is pretty good.

An intelligent person would see the risk associated with all this injuries, you don't get more durable when you go through your 30's. Huge risk with Karlsson but potential huge reward if he stays healthy.

He is healthy now, fully. And it shows. No offensive defenseman is as elite as Erik. Whoever gets him with retained salary is getting a goldmine. Flawless zone entries, exquisite passing…he transforms a mediocre power play into an elite powerhouse by himself.

The key word is, when healthy. And yes he is healthy now but he's not been very healthy for much of the past 5 seasons before, that is risky. And he makes too much money. So yes you will get a return. A 1st and Liljegren is a pretty good return. But you have to make the money work and that will require retainment and cap going back. It's not happening without that.

You could say the same of any player anytime, acquiring Crosby you are worried about concussions, acquiring Doughty youre concerned about his knees. Your logic of only covering Karlsson with this is pretty arbitrary. No **** we have to take cap back and retain. Especially with Toronto. Less so with a team like Seattle. Honestly hope he doesn’t go to Toronto because they have one of the worst prospect pools easily and are full of bad contracts. But they are the most likely to make a desperate move.

You’re not getting Karlsson for a couple of cap dumps and a late 1st. It is going to cost a lot. Grier said it himself, “we are not just going to give away one of the best players in the world and were not going to retain 50% either” so all these acgms with Brodie, Murray and Voit are hilariously off. Thats IF a guy like Murray will even waive his no trade for a rebuilding that is traditionally hard on goalie stats….

And anyone who has injury risk and is older and has major cap and term, won't get the return you think they should. Liljegren and as I have mentioned, I'd give up Robertson or Niemela if that's what it takes as well. So it's not a late first and a couple of cap dumps. Brodie isn't even a cap dump, he'd be your best defenceman and a true top 4 defender who will likely get you another 1st at the deadline. Think objectively man and don't get greedy. Moving an 11.5 million 33 year isn't going to be easy and it won't bring the return you want.

This is just common sense. Teams are giving away decent players to get cap space. How could you possibly expect any contender (that's the only situation Karlsson is going want to go to) can afford 11.5 million dollars? Let's here that explanation and then we can talk about denial.

@PierreVLeBrun
mentions that Seattle, Carolina, and Pittsburgh are teams that continue to have dialogue regarding Erik Karlsson, who has final say. "This is a trade the Sharks want to make."
@TSNBobMcKenzie
speculates a third team might get involved to lower Karlsson's AAV.

Toronto out of the running looks like.

Not a Leafs fan brother, and I'm not at all passionate about where Karlsson goes or what he's worth. Just dropped in my two cents in a bucket. I respect your commitment to fighting a comment section war on Erik Karlsson's behalf. Everyone needs a hill to die on
