it's a cheap deal for sure, but am I missing something? I just don't see an NHL player here or even an above average AHLer who would deserve an NHL contract?

He'll likely be on the AHL team unless there's a spate of injuries. They have a bunch of rookie and 2nd year pro wingers in AHL this season, so they want high quality veteran centers to help groom them.

And of course, Holland ALWAYS makes sure there are training camp battles so the young talent has someone pushing them.
