That’s funny. They just signed Sanheim Hanafin is a pending UFA that’s a straight pipe dream.

I really doubt Nylander is willing to go from one Canadian market to another. I'd be willing to bet his no trade teams are the other 6 Canadian teams, Buffalo, and 3 random one's after that.

Buffalo says no, so 5m Brodie stays a Leafs. Don't want eight years of Sanheim even at 5,.

Saying 10 million is much different than 1.25 per year. When the cap is over 90 million, 1.25 won't matter as much. Especially to remove the 5 mil a year on the cap.

Ok thanks, I feel like they're going to move off brodie just bc the cap cost and term remaining.

First deal feels like a ton of value for Calgary to be giving up. Nylander is good, but sending back a legit top pair D, a solid #4 in Zadorov, a legit middle-6 player in Dube, plus retention and the bad end of a pick swap for Willie and a 6th/7th D feels like needlessly gutting your depth, especially when you consider they only have 2 NHL-quality D signed for 2024-25.

If I'm the Flames, I think I try and run it back as much as possible this season and see if a new voice in the room changes things - clearly Daryl Sutter had worn out his welcome last season. They still might have to move a guy like Zadorov or Tanev to make it a little easier, but there's a ton of cap space and basically a blank slate of a roster for them next summer - I think it would make more sense to try and hang on to a veteran like Hanifin when you have a lot of term and cap tied up in vets like Huberdeau, Kadri, Weegar, and Markstrom.

On top of that, I don't see why Travis Sanheim would waive his NTC and want to leave Philly; I also don't see why the Flyers would accept a single 3rd rounder if you're asking them to tie up their retention spot for nearly a decade on a guy who's still in his prime.

Brodie for a 2nd feels fair but Buffalo isn't the ideal spot - their D-corps is set and if anything, I could see them moving *out* a d-man instead of bringing another one in.

I take this deal if I'm Anaheim, honestly - I'd run Murray out there on a 65/35 split with John Gibson to keep him fresh and see if I can get anything extra back at the deadline by retaining in full on him.

Eating $10M is still eating $10M no matter how you word it and no sane person is going to say sure we will pay a guy for the next 8 years to play for someone else.

Brodie M NTC has to be considered, as does what team wants to take on his 5m cap even one season. Due to Leafs cap situation, I think he is bought one this summer which is cap hit of zero in 23/24 and 2.5m in 24/25,

I would prefer they didn't, that 2.5 is gonna make things difficult in next summer, esp. if they buy out Murray.

Unless the new FO team feels that carrying 1.25 mil on the cap instead of 6.25 mil to rectify an 8 year mistake is worth it. This is no where near as "crazy" as Billy G buying out Parise and Suter, 1.25m a year for 8 years is nothing to a professional sports franchise, especially a big money team like Philly.

Buying out a bad contract you inherited happens all the time see DiPietro, paying a guy to play on another team for 6-8 years has never happened (as far as I know). Also who knows how useful that $1M could be.

That could also be because salary retention hasn't been around forever, so there's a far less sample size. It's clearly moot now, it's just not as big a deal in the grand scheme as you're making it, in my opinion anyway.

in 6-8 years the cap hit will go from like 1.1% to 0.7% or less.. the cap should not be flat in the coming years

True, but I don't see any other options. if they do buyout options for Brodie and Murray, it's a 5.2m cap hit next year...But Domi, Klingberg and Bertuzzi are gone....would have to be replaced with inexpensive players.
