The Nylander problem

Created by: jsteed02
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 5, 2023
Published: Jul. 5, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Nylander is my favourite player so I don’t want to trade him but if he’s not going to re-sign for an amount Toronto can do, might as well get value. With Beniers, I could see Wright be tradeable by the Kraken, for the right price. Nylander is in his prime and fits their suddenly competitive timeline, and provides real top line scoring. Leaves Toronto with a ton of cap space to work with next season

Sooooo did you miss the part where he signs an extension with Seattle or did you just choose not to read it?

So, do you think it makes sense of Seattle??? Or do you miss the part where the Leafs tell/ask Nylander, "We want your sorry ass out of town, so negotiate an extension with Seattle, so we can trade you. Now you don't come to an agreement with the Kraken, you welcome back to the Leafs on a Cup run."
Very, very few sign and trades are made by a contending team with a year left on a keys players contract. Can you think of one?

There just isn’t a nylander problem. The only ‘problem’ the leafs have this year is getting under the cap, and lots of time for that. And lots of time to work out a deal with Willy (& Matty); they both want to be here so it’ll all get worked out.

Sure looks like the Leafs are going to have to buy out Murray and Brodie this year (cap hit of 687,000) but 24/25 it's a cap hit of 5.2m. I don't see them retaining both Matthews and Nylander for 24/25.

True, but I stated revenue - Leafs generate the most. And rangers are worth (slightly) more only because of the value of MSG. But with real estate prices in Toronto continuing to climb only a matter of time before the Leafs are highest value (market price), highest revenue and highest operating income - the trifecta.

One reason the Madison Square, the Leafs arena and the LA Kings arena are worth so much is that they are three most used arenas in North America. The break even for an arena is about 225 events, the three mentioned earlier have over 300 events annually.

Murray - sure, but no chance Brodie is bought out; that would be insane .

You’re insane if you think the Leafs are buying out Brodie. Muzzin on LTIR and a trade or buyout of Murray puts them multiple millions under the cap. I can’t believe how many Leafs fans hope for their own team to fail

I would you do a Leafs roster without a Nylander trade, and see how a buyout of Murray and Brodie is necessary.

Well, just do a Leaf roster without a Nylander trade, a Brodie buyout is cap necessary

First scenario , Murray is traded - rather than bought out; sign sammy for $3M and run a 21 man roster.
Second scenario; brodie is traded rather than bought out - he is one of the best defensive dmen in the league on a reasonable cap hit and an expiring contract, value.
Third scenario; Willy is traded.
Just don’t see anyway they buy both Murray and Brodie out and face a $4.5M penalty next year

Well, I don't see a Murray trade.....though I would like it. And I don't see Samsonov getting just 3m. Brodie trade? Don't know any team on his trade list that could take on his 5m cap...or want to.
Trading Willy. Is now has M NTC, and again what team on his list can afford his 7m cap hit without sending cap back to the Leafs

Why so pessimistic? All of those trades can happen - although I agree will be nothing easy in the flat cap world of nhl. I gotta think Tre & company (Pridham) knew what they were doing when they signed the FAs that put us over the cap. There is another shoe or two to stop

Do one yourself and see. Muzzin LTIR and Murray trade leaves enough cap space to sign Samsonov. You’re just delusional and hate your own team. Get a grip

Brodie is a top 3 defensive defenceman in the league by most analytics. How you people have convinced yourselves he’s terrible is beyond me

You're delusional.....about the Murray traded. And about the Brodie trade. Of course the biggest delusion of this post is the trade of Nylander to Seattle.

I prefer not to trade Brodie at all. but cap wise it looks necessary. Who are "you people" who thinks he's terrible.
