KAndre - Laffy Part 1

Created by: gdli
Team: 2023-24 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 9, 2023
Published: Jul. 9, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assumptions:

With the Rangers are unable to match a competing offer sheet, they choose to trade Lafrenière's signing rights.

Re: K'Andre, I'd go no higher than $4.5M at this time. There is a substantial audience out there that believe K'Andre lacks or refuses to exhibit toughness. Not to mention he prone to taking" nights off." These observations are not without merit.

Unlike the Ranger front office, who I've watched for 65+ years specialize in overpaying, in many cases "past their sell by date" players, they need to grow a spine and impose some fiscal discipline.

Since K'Andre is the subject, is he as affective without Trouba? Personally I think he would benefit from playing with Braden.

For the launch K'Andre out the torpedo tubes crowd and retain Laffy stay tuned. That will be the next edition.

There is ZERO chance Drury would take a 2nd round pick for Laffy. It's laughable really.

I considered MTL and several other teams. I certainly would be amenable to your proposal. Appreciate the feedback!

Are they really in a position to get into a bidding war?

Lol read the comments at the top. One said 2nd round pick and Montreal fan said 2024 1st. Sounds like a bidding war to me

Attached the wrong response the first time. I have no doubt they are already shopping Laffy, just in case.

What's wrong with having multiple franchises expressing interest. If as, you start engaging in a bidding war, you walk away. Walking away in such a situation, is an act of fiscal discipline. Fiscal discipline has been lacking for many decades. e.g. Who was the idiot who as part of the Breadman's contract allow a buyout of the last year of his contract, place the Rangers in the stellar position of reducing their CAP hit by $300K down to a lofty $11.3M? Would you have signed onto that?

I meant a bidding war over trading his rights. Obviously trade his rights to the highest seller

Even though Drury emphatically said he wasn't?

In any case, there will be no offer sheet. Laffy has already commented on how happy he is in NYC and his bridge deal with be in the $2.5m x 2 years range. BUT, on the very off chance he got an offer sheet and the compensation was a 2nd round pick, they would match or Dolan would show him the door.

You seem to be the lone wolf so far. The point of the exercise is:

If the Rangers got backed into a corner with competing offer sheets for both K'Andre and Laffy, and they chose to retain K'Andre, would Chris be laughing then?

Apparently, you missed the point.

I'd be happy to see both of them settle for less to stay in NY. But you still not getting the point I am trying to make. If the NYR do not have the dinero match, then what?

Oh I see, so now it's not one offer sheet, it's two. LOL. Sure, real good chance of happening. Sorry I commented at all on this nonsense.

I can't wait to read the next response, that is what the Part II is about (yet to be posted, but coming soon to a theater near you), the flip side, only this time it's K'Andre instead of Laffy. If the Rangers sign Scanlin, Emberson and Pajuniemi to 2 year $775K deals, they have just over $6M of CAP space to deal with Laffy and K'Andre. Now you find yourself facing competing offer sheets for both and you have to choose to retain one or the other, and K'Andre is the keeper what do you expect in return for Laffy's rights? No platitudes, please. I know what the players and Ranger management have stated, but that is for public consumption.

How high would you go for Laffy before retaining K'Andre becomes untenable under any circumstances, and vice versa?

So the situation is you are backed into a corner and have to trade Laffy's Signing Rights, What do you ask for in return? That's the Question.

It's an absurd question because before any GM would trade away a 21 year old player like Laffy, they would trade away a veteran if their back was against the wall cap wise. Only a GM that wants to be fired would trade away a 21 year old that was a 1st overall pick, and 1st in franchise history, for anything less than a haul. if he can't get a haul, he signs him, or in your absurd scenario, matches an offer sheet.

Drury has already said they're not shopping Laf, and this is also a pitiful return for him especially when there are bound to be teams who would offer more if we were actually shopping him. I'm very glad you're not the Rangers GM.

I notice you too do not provide a specific proposal about a return for Laffy's signing rights. If you cannot manage that, then let's agree to disagree!

If you want a value I would sell Laf for, I'd do it for at the very least a top 16 pick + a cost controlled RW with upside. In this scenario if we're backed into a corner a 2nd is already WAY too low of a haul. If a team offers less than 5m we can just ship off Goodrow (throw in a 1st if we have to) with a few picks to make room to match, so that already puts the minimum value (offer sheet compensation) at a 1st + a 3rd, then cue a bidding war of teams trying to upscale Montreal's offer sheet of a high 1st + 3rd, the value will defintiely get a LOT higher than just a 2nd rounder. He's the former 1OA pick who still has a lot of upside I don't get how you can be fine with letting him go for chump change.
