I think Toronto would want better win now pieces, and it also doesn’t make sense for Montreal to give up a 1st+ for a pending UFA while rebuilding

First, I can’t imagine the leafs trading Willy in division but to the habs - pretty much no chance.
Second, picks or prospects don’t interest leafs - there really is no roster player on habs (that was available) that I would take back for Willy
Third - if that’s the deal, leafs sign him. He has stated he wants to stay in T.O.

Value is fine for sure. But I personally would want a better prospect than Engstrom.

I want me Wifi. But that ain't happening haha.

I assume Mitch does not like the trade for the Leafs, which I agree, even though you are giving up a lot. I would miss Nylander and we don't get our D upgrade (here).

1st point is fair but Cat was just traded within the division
2nd point, there is no way a team would give up a player with Nylanders skillset for Nylander, theyd just keep the original player. Or example, Ari wouldntt trade Keller for Nylander, theyd just keep Keller
3rd point, Leafs arent willing to sing him at 10m, they are closer to 8m for him. And to counter the Nylander loves toronto point, Dubois said he wanted to play for montreal until LA gave him for money. Players dont care that much about where they play as long as they get their money

Id rather give up Xhekaj over Engtrom but we just drafted his brother so that isnt happening. And the leafs need more O depth than they do another d man. And if they need one so bad, using the assets given plus some of your own could easily get Pesce or Hanifin

Cat is / was a different situation all together. He controlled (to a large extent) where he would be traded - he wanted to sign Extension in Detroit - limited the Sens options. Leafs have 22 teams that could trade Willy; pretty much guarantee it’ll be out of division.
I don’t expect same style of player as Willy back but it has to be a player that can step into top 6 or top 4 (D); Habs can’t offer that.
PLD went to LA because Montreal mgmt got complacent and kings outbid them. Are you telling me habs wouldn’t have signed him to similar deal if they had met jets asking price (like kings eventually did)?
No one knows the truth of what Willy asked for vs what leafs offered; I’m not too worried - lots of time to work out the next contract. Pasta didn’t sign until close to end of season. Aho hasn’t extended yet either; it’s just because it’s the leafs - media driven drama

Leafs are never trading Montreal a player like Nylander even if they provide the best return
