Projecting 2024-25

Description
What do the Avs look like in a year+?
Cap increase to $88 million.
Assuming that Landeskog is back from LTIR. If not then they possibly sign Drouin (if all things work out) to a bigger long term contract. Without that there isn't really room for Drouin in the top 6; of course there is a chance that he finds chemistry on the 3rd line but we have a trio of youngsters that might be NHL ready to consider there: Olausson, Kovalenko, and Polin among others.

Assuming we run a full 23-man roster, we should have about $4.6 million in salary cap to re-sign Devon Toews; but the following year have to extend Rantanen, Byram, Georgiev, and/or Ryan Johansen so we can't over-extend ourselves. The projected cap increase will probably cover Byram's projected raise but we'll need a couple million each for Rantanen and Georgiev. If Byram stays healthy in 2023-24 and continues to develop then he'll be in that $8 million range and we'll be expecting him to get top line minutes (or near enough). Either Toews, Girard, or Manson become a 3rd pair luxury which just doesn't work financially. Toews is the better all-around blueliner but a move has to be made before 2025-26 season to create the room to keep him. Manson's health and the ability of Sean Behrens (hopefully in the AHL at that point) to possibly replace Sam Girard but on a much cheaper ELC could factor in greatly to this as well. Unfortunately outside of Sam Malinski there isn't much in the RHD pipeline so Manson replacements (especially for his size and style of play) are non-existent at the moment.
Both Manson (12 team) and Girard (9 team) will have modified no-trade clauses in effect mid year 2024.
If Landeskog does not recover from his injury then the cap situation becomes dependent upon how well RyJo/Drouin fit in to the lineup and what their possible next contract(s) might look like. Any early extension on either of them next season would indicate to me that it has a bearing on Landeskog's likely return.

Georgiev extension should be the biggest in-season priority as we have little goalie talent in our pipeline and going back to the market would be too expensive.

Aside from RyJo the Avs now have a 2C prospect in their pipeline which could factor in for the 2024-25 season in Calum Ritchie who will be playing this next season in the OHL after recovering from his shoulder injury but eerily fits the mold of Ryan Johansen as well.

So the Avs have done a good job of addressing all of their near future roster holes with the one exception of a big physical RHD; which is why I can't understand the aversion to signing someone like Cal Foote (only 24 years old) and putting him in Loveland for a year to see if they can develop him. He costs them nothing right now to acquire and is a classic "buy low" candidate.

While handedness doesn't matter as much for a shutdown physical defender than it does an offensive/two-way player it does help the flexibility in the lineup; especially in the top 4. With Behrens and Gulyayev in the system as both small lefty puck-movers in the Sam Girard mold; we need to create balance in our pipeline and fill the void after moving out Justin Barron and Drew Helleson.

Toews doesn't consider doing that for even a single second. If you want to keep him, one of Girard or Manson needs to go.

No real complaints or critiques here other than that, but it's a big one.

There is no way Toews signs a one-year deal for what would actually be less money than he makes this coming season. His current cap hit is $4.1M but his base for 2022-23 was already $4.6. His base in 2023-24 is $5.9.

Oh yeah, I don't think it is highly likely unless he gives us a huge hometown discount for one more Cup run; I just wanted to narrow down what we could even offer him at all as we are pretty stuck with the cap crunch despite the increase over the next few seasons.

If Manson could stay healthy then I would have no problem moving out Sam Girard since we have a couple high-end prospects to replace him but we have nothing to replace Manson so he is vitally important to our roster and any future draft picks would be too far out in the future before they could help out. Moving Toews to the right side is certainly an option if Manson isn't reliable but they would have to move his salary out to do it, as you pointed out.

Yep that's why I built this projection to see what cap space would be there for him. If the Avs aren't in a good spot to compete someone on D is going to get moved (besides Makar and Byram of course).

I would expect them to start the season with 21 healthy skaters like they did this past season. That would open up 900k to 1.8M depending on if Gabe is ready at the start of the season. They could get to an 8x7 if they were willing to go with 20 skaters to start the season (This would require Gabe being ready to go on opening night or dress 19 skaters to start the season).

Manson has to go; he is injured all the time and sucking up a lot of cap space. Luckily, the remainder of his deal is pretty tradeable (only two years remaining and low actual salary). I don't think the Avs need to re-sign Toews; dude is great but they'll need that money for other players and they can put a competent mid-range D with Cale and he'll be more than fine. One important thing to remember about the prospects: the Avs have not been committed in the least to getting them to the NHL and Bednar appears to not like to play them. Unless they're just killing it in the AHL or junior, I'd say the chances of any of them making it onto the Avs full-time are no better than 1 in 10.

You’re running 23 COL never runs 23 they almost always run 21(it’s one of sole reasons MacDermid makes the team so often) that gives you an extra $1.6M that you can give to Toews that gets you closer to realistic, but no way no how does Toews sign a 1 year deal. But as mentioned above if you want to re-sign Toews Manson or Girard has to be moved.

Eventually that's going to have to change with Bednar. Or honestly I could see that being the reason we have to move on from him. But we will have to play the young guys here in the next 4-5 years. Its just going to have to happen.

Other than the Toews money, Kovalenko is going to abandon his contract before he rides the bench or plays in the AHL. Him and his father have made that abundantly clear in interviews. That's the whole reason he has stayed in Russia to this point. I'm also not sure if OO can overcome his BAD AHL start. I'd be very happy if he did.

I think you kind of hit on the Avs development program problem without actually saying it. 100% right on Kovalenko but I think part of the reason they didn’t want to come here is that the Avs dev program kinda sucks. Guys aren’t out in roles in the AHL that they will play in the NHL so there really isn’t any development. Guys expected to be bottom 6 guys need to play those roles, OO has a wicked shot and can skate put him with a passer and help him work on his 2 way game, I think the balance between winning (very important in the AHL for money) and true player development gets skewed to far in one way

We are kind of throwing numbers at the 3RW of the future so as long as one of them "hit" we are ok; if Landeskog is done then it might open up a top 6 winger spot.

Manson is way easier to replace (and less costly to do so) than Girard. Yes the Avs have prospects that profile more as a Sam Girard player, but until they prove they're ready, I think Girard should stay.

I was shocked the team signed Manson. Then I saw that his trade protection opened up at the same time Toews was due for his raise and it made a lot more sense. I think they put that rip cord in there for a very specific reason. If Toews takes a reasonable deal, Manson is as good as gone. If Toews asks for too much, then Manson stays and they need to figure out how to fill the giant hole Toews departure leaves. That's how I see it anyway.
