Glad to see the Islanders/Habs split on this because as fans it is natural for us to overrate our own players! You're never going to get both sides in full agreement on these things. Anderson is the better player right now (if healthy), and Wahlstrom could be better, but, if he lives up to his potential, that would come at a higher cap hit than $2.75M over the next 4 seasons. Best case scenario from Wahlstrom's perspective is taking something in the 2x$1-1.5M range for a bridge deal then the sky's the limit. Does he have a DeBrincat-like breakout? He could get pricey, and that's fine, but this trade is not just "Josh Anderson for Oliver Wahlstrom." It's trading uncertainty (Wahlstrom) for a middle-six lock (Anderson) at a reasonable cap hit. And that costs something from an Islanders perspective. From a Habs perspective, Wahlstrom better fits the rebuild timeline.
I'll also just say again, I wouldn't like this trade as an Islanders fan but I'd be intrigued by it.
