Kovalenko is a Thing

Created by: Avsfantrumpetman

Initial Creation Date: Jul. 22, 2023

Description
Evan Rawal is reporting that the Avs are going to sign Kovalenko shortly and loan him to Torpedo for the KHL season. This is what I anticipate things will look like once the KHL season ends. I still think we add a piece like Heinen, and once Kovalenko comes over that likely makes Cogliano/Meyers the candidates to sit. I would also expect a pretty quiet deadline for us this year as Kovalenko will be our de-facto addition. I'm also anticipating that Colton will supplant RyJo at 2C, possibly in training camp.

Myers over cogliano? You have to be kidding Myers isn't anything special, plus byram need sto be on pair 1 or 2. Toews is a dpair 1 player with cale.also gotta put johansen on that 2nd line and lehky on line 1.

This is an awesome roster however I would bury MacDermid and get another 7th dmen like foote.

Come playoff time I think cogs will be playing and I think pavel will center the 4th if meyers falters for whatever reason.

Good stuff man

Totally forgot to re-do my d- pairings. I'll edit that right now. Like I said in the description, I feel like Colton will overtake RyJo for 2C. But I also agree that Drouin, Mac, and Lehky is probably the right 1st line. Also in the description I said Meyers or Cogliano sits. Just picked one of them for this example.

Nah, RyJo had arguably his worst season ever and still was within 4pts of Colton in 17 less games. I fully anticipate him being paired with Mikko and just feeding Moose and to pick up a bunch of pts on the PP I really like his addition and not to knock Colton but if he is playing 2C the Avs are just having a repeat of last year because Colton is most definitely not a 2C.

Right now he isn't, but I'm not discounting more growth from him. I think that's why we opted for him over Compher (other than money). Like I said, just a hunch.

IMO the top 6 should be :
Drouin-Mac-Val
Lehky-RyJo-Moose

Gotta keep Drouin & Mac together & Lehky & Moose together

Never thought of the Lehky Moose combo, but I think you're right in terms of spreading the talent out.

Yeah I think the two you can flex with are Lehky and Val, I like the idea of a monster sized line of Val Moose and RyJo and then sliding the speed line of MacK Drouin and Lehky then the sandpaper line of Wood Colton and LOC giving teams 3 different types of lines.

RyJo is and has proven he is a playmaker as evidence of a/60 of 1.7 two years ago and the fact he was the first move they made in the off season. Yeah they got Colton to replace Compher but it’s the 3C Compher not the 2C Compher who disappeared against Seattle. If everything breaks right you get a 100pts 1C a 65-70pt 2C in RyJo and a 40-45pt 3C in Colton that’s my hope.

Can we just give Pius Suter the remaining 1.75M after a Meyers signing. Let Suter play 3RW until Kovalenko arrives and then kick him down to 4C.

I think we're gonna wait out this last signing until mid-August just like EROD. If Suter is still there, we're probably going to try and give him a flat 1 mill. I still think the goal is to have about 800K in cap wiggle room for the deadline.

You can have more cap wiggle room at the deadline by spending the whole 83.5M to start the season with a 23 man roster and then dropping 2 guys to the AHL to get to the Avs preferred 21 skaters. Would have at minimum $1.5M that way.

Totally get that this is a strategy, but not sure with our injury history its a strategy I want to employ next year. But you definitely might be right.

It's a strategy they have to employ this year. Because they are using LTIR, they won't accumulate capspace. So you field a 23 man roster on paper to open the season creating a 7M LTIR pool with Landeskog's contract. 2 of those players are guys that can pass to the AHL either by clearing waivers (Olofsson) or because they don't need waivers (Meyers/JLF) and then you have the 1.5M in LTIR pool money available for call ups or to use at the deadline. If they have a lot of injuries, they can run a 19 skater lineup for a night and then use emergency callups that allow them to go over the cap to field a full 20.

Edit: We saw them use the emergency recall on Meyers and Hunt all the time last year. And several other AHL players.
