If you are awarded an expansion franchise (the Ontario “palhals”) and you got to pick one guy…would you take 1-year of Matthews over any of the 25 listed?

Every player to me on that list has more value than one year of Matthews
I looked over that list. Let's imagine (and it may be realistic) and Matthew signs a 13.5m X 4 years deal with the Leafs starting in 23/24. Gee, I don't think he would even break into the top 10 among forwards, never mind some Dman with having better value such as Maker and Fox

Think another player I can see mentioned is Brayden Point.

Yeah, but with whom?

Look, I didn't mean that as a dig at Matthews or at the Leafs. I'm thinking about value as if I was the GM of the Kansas City Daydreamers - would I expend a ton of assets to acquire Matthews without knowing where he'll sign in a year? He's a free agent next summer, that means he can walk away and I'm left with nothing. Due to this fact alone I can't assign him top-25 value in the league, as I'd rather have a lesser player who comes with several years of team control than 1 certain year with Matthews.

It's that simple.

Yeah, I think Sid should be on the top 25,,,,and he has been remarkably consistent therefore his career.

Ovechin? It is just me but he has had some fine seasons especially earlier in his career, but to IMO he's kinda of a one trick pony on the PP. Lots of goal and points (which is important) but he never been one that played consistently well to help his team win regularly. His 9.5m salary....OK but not great value.

he can walk away, but all it takes is common sense to know hes resigning

Svech, Stutzle, Hughes, Thomas, Tage.

Remember a few years ago when there was a glut of players around $6m and were super cheap (MacKinnon, Pastrnak, Barkov, Marchand, Huberdeau, etc)? I feel like all these young guys locked in around $8m will appear similarly in a few years.

Very fair argument, Hughes' contract in particular totally slipped my mind.

It's not guaranteed, so it affects his trade value. This isn't Most Valuable Maple Leafs Players, the value must be universal.

I admit it would be tough but McDavid is number 1 no matter what term he has. Matthews and MacKinnon are 2 and 3 for sure. Then there are so many good players it's hard to say who's the most valuable. Age would matter for sure but unless you are 29 and over, age won't diminish your value.

I'd argue Kaprizov over Robertson.

But that's just me being nitpicky.

Yes, Robertson is younger and comes in at a lower AAV.

But fans tend to forget Kaprizov was on pace to score over 50 goals himself until Logan Stanley decided to play London Bridge is falling down on top of Kaprizov. And Kaprizov subsequently missing the next 4 and a half weeks because of it.

Kaprizov is also a much more complete two-way player than Robertson too. Whereas Robertson is mostly just offensive minded.

Or are you basing this on Robertson's longer contract to term?

Longer term, younger…but honestly the order doesn’t matter much. More about who is in and who is out.
