If that's the best the jets are able to get I don't blame them for trying to keep him even as a self rental

I can pretty certainly say if Tatar was getting 4mil he would have already signed somewhere. Doubt he costs more than 2, maybe 2.5. Also he is redundant to the team. I’d rather have the depth and the space available for callups on the fly rather than get strapped like we saw the rangers get when they signed Kane

Yikes, can only hope 🙏 that Chevy isn't thinking with that logic, just take the 1st and whatever other pieces they can get and move on.

Whats the point of keeping Helle as an own rental, to be a first round exit again and no assets to show for him, really hope that isn't what happens.

Give me cap room and spare forwards over Tatar. Poorly put together roster.

Better than trading him for what is a big difference in quality of goalie and VV isn't signed long term. He would be ripped apart as we have been so accustomed to helle bailing the team out. I'd rather keep him for 1 year than downgrade goalie that far for what is likely a late first which won't be a difference maker if they make the nhl. I get waiting to trade him but Hellebuyck is their most important aspect to success and with the team not wanting to rebuild the difference between helle and VV could be 10 plus points and in the playoffs of not. It's just not worth trading him unless we get a major asset like Holtz included.

Losing him for nothing sure would suck but are you serious okay if they trade helle for VV who is just an average goalie a 1st that doesn't really have a chance at being a star and a prospect that won't make it. If this is the deal and the jets are flirting with playoffs I keep him. Only way helle is traded is if they are multiple spots behind in the race than it makes sense.

It’s a one year deal with extra cap space for a guy who consistently brings offense to the table while being one of the top 20 defensive forwards in the league. You need defense to win and I’d take that over Nosek or Lazer any day. Then the cap comes off the books and goes right into Mercer’s pocket.. they can not and will not pursue any other big names, the name of the game now is keeping everybody you have signed

The Rangers didn’t get strapped, the got exactly the roster they wanted, it was just flawed because it relied on aged stars and slower forwards which the Devils exploited with a better built team. None of the AHL guys they’d bring in would be a better player than Tatar, he doesn’t have the speed or offensive generation problem the Rags had and he’d be off the books next year so Mercer could sign longterm which is what you’re saving for.

You are trying to run a team with no extra defenseman. Tatar himself isn't bad, but not for the sake of just kicking McLeod out for 4C, which if you don't like him, just play Nosek. We have more scoring than last year and our D will be fine.

I'd rather get another 1st whether late or not then getting nothing and definitely do not want to see Helle re-signed by the Jets.

Do we think we're gonna get a haul for a guy who'll be 31 when he signs his next contract, has a ridiculous want for his next contract and there's a limited amount of teams looking for a goalie?

I just don't see the point in hanging on to get nothing for being a first round exit yet again.

I get it but the likelihood the jets trade him is solely based on where they are come deadline. I understand the philosophy of not losing your players for nothing but again I feel like with a depressed goalie market and his contract trading him for such a weak package is not even worth it. Say we trade him for VV a 2025 first and a meh prospect. That first whether it's 2024 or 2025 has maybe a 30% chance of being a 200 game nhler let alone someone who is a decent contributor. VV is okay but sets the team back massively and with the direction the jets want to go that would be a massive drop. The prospect again what are the odds they become a 200+ game player, pretty low.

In summary I don't blame the jets for not trading helle if they aren't going to get an impact player or someone who will be for years to come. As the deal would be a late 1st that I assume maybe a 200 game player which is the most likely occurrence there. VV can leave after his deal and would not get a trade return if helle is getting this deal and a meh prospect that does nothing. So all in all after VV leaves we have a 20 year 2024/2025 25-32 first that won't become anything near what helle means to the team today. Thus no trade.

What, you wouldn't have faith in a Brossoit/Vanacek tandem? lol

I do wonder if LA might come calling for Helle as their goaltending duo looks terrible, maybe they'll be willing to part with Byfield by then.
