A 3rd team involved WILL NOT retain money on EK but rather simply take on Petry

Definitely need to find a way to squeeze at least one more on the roster (22).

Hawks aren't retaining $1.75M plus taking on Petry for a 2025 2nd and 3rd. You have to remember, the retention slot for the Hawks is worth more than a 2nd and 3rd alone. I don't see them retaining for 4 years on EK for less than a 1st just simply due to the retention slot being taken.

This is only Pens side of things to help the Hawks they send Zaitsev to SJS. Moves them on from bad contract and they bring in Petry at his value as Pens retain the 1.725 that the Hawks are retaining on EK65. Basically Hawks are just retaining 2 years of EK

If a forward is injured you can call up Puuts or Nylander, but it does put in a bind at the same time though this roster is an improvement

First its not a 1.75 its 1.725 about a 25K difference there but still a difference. Also while the retention slot is valuable you would still have one slot and after McCabe's comes off next year you would have a second retention slot. At most I would see 2 2nds and a 3rd (thats at most). Additionally because I forgot to do it Zaitsev can go to SJS as part of this deal as well getting you out of that contract.

Penguins really selling out to get EK65 without having a playoff Goaltender in place like MAF is really really desperate of them. But hey that dynasty has kinda had an opposite path than the Hawks so maybe they do it!

I don't think a third team will retain on EK.

I think the price is correct on EK (probably have retention at $3.5M tho)

I also think you have the right mindset on some retention on Petry because i think he's fine around $5M AAV, definitely over paid at $6.25M.

So i think you could work a Petry to CHI deal with Pens retaining some money on Petry, but CHI won't retain on EK as well.

??? Jarry is more than capable of being a playoff Goalie. Hasn't really had the chance to showcase it because of untimely injuries. Is he a franchise altering goalie like Igor or Sorokin, no. Is he above average and top half of the league, yes.

'Twas an idea. Possibly the best way to work it out is to find out if Zaitsev has SJS on his 10 team and if not do a Petry (1.25 retained) for Zaitsev 1 for 1 and then ship both Zaitsev and Granny to SJS as part of the SJS deal.

To be fair, MAF was a pretty pedestrian playoff performer overall while he was with the Pens

I understand the retention slot situation, all I'm saying is the hawks are not locking up one for 4 years for a 2025 2nd and 3rd. Watch how important those are at the deadline when they can move existing players (like last year), without taking on any additional cap with Petry or EK, and weaponize those retention slots for 2nd and 3rd round picks.

Jarry is definitely a gamble, but I stand by the fact that he was the best FA goalie on the market this summer. (lots of trade rumors on Hellebuyck, Ullmark and Saros and not one them have moved). It just comes down to his health which is the gamble. When healthy he's shown in the regular season he's a very good goalie. He's only played 8 playoff games and I'd personally not count the game 7 vs rangers in 2022. He was pushed back into the lineup to try and win that game and was not healthy.

He was definitely not great in the Isle's series in 2021, but in his defense the team in front of him played like absolutely crap.

So i'd personally disagree that it is desperate, it's a smart play if the price is right. EK immediately approves the penguins overall offense and PP no questions asked. If the roster NHL players they have to lose to gain EK are someone like Ty Smith and Granlund (with Petry going elsewhere) and EK coming in, that's a huge boost.

Who cares about prospects or picks, the pens rebuild is going to be brutal regardless. I'd personally rather see them improve the 3rd line than get EK but they have a top 5 player all time, they should absolutely do whatever to put the best team around him until he retires.
