NYR next season -- Galchenyuk and Shattenkirk

Created by: Dizz30
Team: 2017-18 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 28, 2017
Published: Jun. 28, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Rangers have a big hole at center and don't want to sign Martin Hanzal or Joe Thornton to a big contract. The Canadiens are looking to move Galchenyuk and have proven repeatedly that they're capable of extremely poor judgment (Gomez-McDonagh, Weber-Subban, etc), and feel that Marc "The Pylon" Staal has something left. So NYR capitalizes and fills the hole at center.

With or without the Staal deal, the Rangers have so much cap space remaining that there's no reason they shouldn't pay up for Shattenkirk, perhaps paying a higher cap hit to shorten the contract (avoiding the problem they encountered with Girardi and Staal). Even more cap room next season when Nash comes off the books.

Do you really thinks that Galchenyuk worths that much? Wow! If I was Habs GM, I'd accept your trade with my eyes closed. No-brainer for Habs perspective.

In my opinion, Galchenyuk is a very good player, but he's far to be so good as you think he is.

You make Staal looks like an average d-man. And I'm sure he's much more than that.

PS: I'm a Pens fan and it seems like I appreciate more your player than you do.

Well, I'm glad you think the trade will work! Yes, I'm a Rangers fan. Staal was once decent moving the puck but then he had his concussions and eye injury, he became a stay-at-home guy who never contributed offensively -- weak on the puck. He had another concussion last season and always looks worn out. Most Rangers fans agree about this, and that his contract is really onerous.

As a Pens fan, I'm sure you appreciate Staal because he's neutralized Crosby, and we in NYC have heard about how upset people in Pittsburgh have been with the way Staal plays against him. But Staal was on the ice when the Rangers have up all those horrible tying goals in the final minutes of games in the playoffs. He proved himself a liability.

So the trade is more about clearing Staal's contract rather than Galchenyuk being an ostensibly great player. But I certainly think he can up his game past what we've seen in MTL.

I was thinking the opposite. Staal's points are down, which makes his $5.7m pay more than he is worth. 15pt a season is like an avg d-man. Is his defense better then Dumoulin? Cause they scored the same number of points last season which means Dumoulin desires $5.7m and Schultz, who scored over 50 has got to be worth like $7 or 8m.

Never heard of Nieves, and the draft pics don't help Montreal who's an the verger of being a real contender. I think this trade is a set back for them, especially due to the lenth of Staal's deal. Ouch.

I'm really surprised that no one is talking about this Smith contract! I'll fully admit I didn't watch him much in NY, but I saw him a fair amount with DET. Did he flip a switch or something? DET was lucky to get a 2nd and 3rd for him because his cap hit was $2.5M. Now $4.35M? I guess I just need to follow the Rangers more often.
