NYR with trade for Barkov

Try looking up Pittsburgh's trade of Jagr to the Capitals or when Pittsburgh traded Kovalev to the Rangers. Apparently NHL GM's don't understand "quality over quantity" either...

NYR with Lafreniere -- Eichel blockbuster to satisfy need at C
What do BUF fans think WOULD be enough for Eichel? In your place, I wouldn't want to trade him at all, which might make me feel that nothing is enough. But the organization is in a state where they might make such a deal anyway.

Are you sure that's a rule? If true, NYR will have to try to trade Brendan Smith in the offseason (to a rebuilding team like Ottawa or Detroit, along with a draft pick). I think they can manage that since it's only 1 year. Boston was able to move Backes.

Yes, but I don't think that changes anything re: Lundqvist. Rangers need to move him for cap reasons and teams will have less of an incentive if NYR waits until the offseason. Carolina needs goaltending right now, especially if Mrazek and Reimer are injured.

The past few years have been rough for Strome -- I think that he might be inclined to take less money to stay and play with Panarin. If that goes well, he can cash in bigger than he could this year.

Rangers fan here. Grabner trade would be more likely if you add Hagelin. Pittsburgh retains some salary but gets him off the books for next season. Rangers will likely be willing to take Hagelin back (with a slightly lower cap hit) because he played his best hockey in NY. If the deal is Grabner for Hagelin and picks, everybody "wins."

Rangers add Bozak
As a Rangers fan, I know all about Lou (from the NYR-NJD rivalry). Hadn't seen that he's claiming Hainsey is a top-4 d-man, but that's just a staged statement. I think the Leafs are working on trading for another top-4 D right now. You can't win with Ron Hainsey (36 yrs old) as one of your top 4.
Also, I've watched enough Leafs hockey (and played the game enough myself) to know that Marincin is horrendous and overmatched in the NHL. Carrick isn't bad but he's small. I'm not saying that Holden is Bobby Orr, but he did have a very strong season last year.
Marner, Nylander, Komarov, Hyman and obviously Marleau can play center. Babcock doesn't hate Nylander anymore. The Leafs can afford to move Bozak for picks/prospects. Otherwise, I doubt we'd be seeing rumors about it.

You guys are really out of it; I see postings all over the Armchair GM page from Leafs fans expecting to re-sign Bozak. He won't fit, and there are already many rumors about this (and JVR and Komarov).
Do some checking on the rumor mill about Bozak to the Rangers, and I guess you'll all be surprised -- though you shouldn't be. You'll need to re-sign Nylander, Marner, Matthews, etc before too long. Connor Brown and Zack Hyman are going to get paid as well.
Hayes-Bozak is a far crazier proposal than this one; Bozak is a 31-year old rental, who would be a lifelong #2-3 center if the Leafs had found somebody better to play with Kessel. Hayes is still growing and young. NYR has plenty of space to re-sign him because Nash's contract is expiring.

NYR plunders the Oilers! Draisatl Offer Sheet
Carolina has a lot of cap space that they're not using. Trading for Staal allows them to acquire more young assets (which is why there are rumors that they'll take Hossa's contract -- same principle except Hossa would go to LTIR unlike M Staal). They have so many young players that they won't need all their cap space for several years.
EDM's cap situation looks hairy to me. Yeah, they'd probably match. NYR could go $1 million higher on Draisatl ($9m) and still make it fit.

I wish, but if that's all Colorado wanted, there'd have been a Duchene trade already. NYR could definitely use another center to replace Stepan, unless there really sure Miller is ready.

Lets go for the cup
Rangers are close to putting together what looks like a great roster on paper.
Lias Andersson may be NHL-ready, but I don't think he'll be a C right out of the gate. I wonder if NYR will move Miller to C. Adding Marchessault would certainly solve a lot of the remaining questions! I don't see why Vegas wouldn't trade him since he'll be a UFA in a year anyway.
The other scenario would be if the Rangers could put together some crazy trade sending Staal to Edmonton or Carolina and get his cap hit off the books (allowing them to pursue another forward with a substantial cap hit). They'd probably have to throw in a high pick to move Staal.

Also I like Grigorenko BUT he can't play with Vesey and Grabner and Buch cannot be on 4th. The lineup would be more even and better for player development if you move Buch to top LW with Mika and Zucc (let Zucc feed him all day) and Kreider to play with Hayes and Miller (big fast line) move Nash to 3rd with Vesey and Girorenko (Nash will supply plenty of education to Grigorenko and with him on PK the third line can reduce his minutes and make him fresher, also he can still contribute and help Vesey grow and Grig grow). Grabner is best suited on 4th line and can help Nieves grow and learn and Puempel.</div></div>
I disagree -- it's more likely that they'll trade Holden. I'm a Rangers fan -- wish we could move Staal to Carolina or Montreal for a bag of pucks, but I don't see it. Maybe if the Rangers threw in a 1st rounder.
They could move Miller to center and then you only need a 4th line center. I could also see them trading for a center -- there's almost nobody decent left.

NYR next season -- Galchenyuk and Shattenkirk
Well, I'm glad you think the trade will work! Yes, I'm a Rangers fan. Staal was once decent moving the puck but then he had his concussions and eye injury, he became a stay-at-home guy who never contributed offensively -- weak on the puck. He had another concussion last season and always looks worn out. Most Rangers fans agree about this, and that his contract is really onerous.
As a Pens fan, I'm sure you appreciate Staal because he's neutralized Crosby, and we in NYC have heard about how upset people in Pittsburgh have been with the way Staal plays against him. But Staal was on the ice when the Rangers have up all those horrible tying goals in the final minutes of games in the playoffs. He proved himself a liability.
So the trade is more about clearing Staal's contract rather than Galchenyuk being an ostensibly great player. But I certainly think he can up his game past what we've seen in MTL.

Hah, well, it has nothing to do with what I think. Look at this:

Otherwise I'd never have suggested Staal to MTL. I completely agree that he's a pylon.

NYR 2017-18 -- Shattenkirk; Raanta; Stepan
I like Stepan, but $6.5 million is too high for a second-line center. As I said, this is what I think WILL happen, irrespective of what I want. I think buying out Girardi means they're going for Shanttenkirk, who doesn't fit. Cutting Stepan is the best way to make that happen, and it's being reported on TSN that he's on the block.

Totally disagree with Captain Flynnt. If you want to re-sign Radulov, that's the price you'll have to pay to keep him off the market.
If I were a Habs fan, I'd want a much longer contract for Galchenyuk, even if it costs a bit more. And maybe time to move on from Markov, but the market could be weak this year.
The problem on this team, ultimately, is the Weber deal. There was an article today on TSN that said that the Rangers-MTL series is a referendum on the trade. Well, there you go. Ages 32-40, $8 million cap hit. And he's rugged, so he'll age faster than somebody like Duncan Keith.

2018 Rangers?
Rangers fan here.
Obviously it would be great to re-sign Smith, but I think you're very short on his cap hit. Maybe $4m would do it, but on the open market, I wouldn't be surprised if he went for more. Same with Shatty. Maybe just a little bit higher on Zibenajad as well.
I'm strongly opposed to dumping Holden, even for a 2nd rounder. He had 34 points this year and a good+/-. Yes, he's one of their weakest defenders, and Vigneault shouldn't have had him on the ice at the end of Game 2 vs MTL, but still. And he has such a low cap hit. If you're going to win, you can't have Clendining in the starting lineup, even on the bottom pair.
Finally, I think the cap will rise to $75m or so; Nash clearly isn't worth $7.8 and he'd still be hard to fit, but I think we could do better than Marchessault in exchange.

Shattenkirk and Hanzal
As a Rangers fan, I like these moves pending what happens with Shattenkirk's contractual situation. NYR has plenty of young blood up the middle, and Rob is 100% correct about Stepan being "the next Callahan."
Also, this is a solid move with respect to the cap because Stepan is overpaid and Gorton needs to scrounge for extra cash to re-sign Zibanejad. The big question is what can be done about Girardi/Staal. Maybe if the Avs tear things down completely they'd consider swallowing one of those contracts for an extra prospect or pick.
EDIT:
One problem, though: what happens to Rangers' D in the expansion draft? Girardi and Staal have NMC's and you can't leave Shatty or McDonagh unprotected.

Need to move Staal or Girardi for cap space. Buying out Girardi doesn't yield enough, and Staal is slightly more tradeable. NYR moves up in the 3rd round, but gives up a prospect.

Your comments don't have much bearing on whether Panarin can fit. Campbell can sign for $1.5 again and he'll still fit this model -- there's enough space. I've heard Pokka is a pretty good prospect. But so what if CHI gets less in return than here? Doesn't change anything. Also, with inflation, I think that $7/per for Panarin could be a major bargain in a couple of seasons. Look at the Rangers' McDonagh contract, for example.
CHI will still have many young, skilled players making under $1 million. They didn't go belly-up just now when they lost Toews. They'd need a few other problems to get into real trouble. I envy CHI -- they're set for years to come.
