NYR with Lafreniere -- Eichel blockbuster to satisfy need at C

Created by: Dizz30
Team: 2020-21 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 11, 2020
Published: Aug. 11, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Rangers apparently believe they need another high-end center to complement Zibanejad. I think that's true. I don't think they see Strome as that player.

I count 3 elite centers on troubled or rebuilding teams who therefore might be available: Eichel, Barkov and Kopitar. Barkov might be the best fit because the Rangers are looking for size, but of course Eichel is the most talented. Kopitar is 32 and has an unwieldy contract.

I think the big question is how much material the Rangers would have to trade to acquire Eichel or Barkov. BUF fans, do you think that Buchnevich, Strome, Chytil, Andersson and 2 1st's would be enough? Ideally BUF would keep Eichel but as everybody knows, that organization is in a state of civil war -- the organization itself must be repaired before they can fix things on the ice.

Yes, the below projection is over the cap, but that leaves the question of Lundqvist, who could (A) retire, (B) be traded or (C) be bought out. All three of these options would make up for the remaining $1.3 million.

Wait until Staal and Smith clear. Eichel may have requested a trade officially by then and his price will drop into a somewhat reasonable price range

What do BUF fans think WOULD be enough for Eichel? In your place, I wouldn't want to trade him at all, which might make me feel that nothing is enough. But the organization is in a state where they might make such a deal anyway.

You’re over the cap, and that trade is horrible for the Sabres.

Edit: NVM, didn’t read the description. Still a horrible trade though.

This is going to feel weird to say because 99% of eichel trades I feel are overpayments on this site but I don’t see a real centrepiece in that deal. I’m not going to call them scraps they aren’t but don’t have anything really grabbing attention out of it.

Eichel would definitely cost you the 2020 1st overall and a goalie. Players like that don't come cheap. But, the big BUT is, you could get away with that.

You can’t have a cap dump in smith and retention and believe there’s anything short of an overpayment at that point. That’s silly.
Counter:
Mika (1M retained) + 22 3rd for Okposo, Pilut, Miller, mitts, Kahun, 8OA, 21 2nd
See how dumb that sounds.

I see 4 pieces that are scraps in a trade for Eichel, and the other 3 would be more of the sweetener variety.

I was thinking about this earlier... if Eichel demanded a trade (probably not happening), would there be any interest from either side in trading Eichel for 1st oa and Trouba (to balance cap)? It's not a deal that would realistically go down because those 1st overalls are just impossible to trade, but I really think NY would win that and BUF would at least have a piece to be happy with if they had to get rid of Jack...

I just don’t see a dump going the other way (Buf) without even more on top. Which teams may need to get cap compliant. Kakko Or Laf would have to be going to Buffalo for them to consider moving Eichel. There has to be a potential star or you keep Eichel. Period.

That’s what I mean. That deal has no foundation to build off of. Kakko at least that’s a place to start.
