Description
just brainstorming the future for fun so be polite
of course if landeskog doesn't come back that changes the cap situation completely
georgiev may be too costly for the avs - though i'm not sure if justus is up for the #1 job by then
toews has to take a little bit of a discount and byram has to take a massive step to be worth that potential cap hit
i believe colton has 2C potential tampa was loaded with centers i think he'll have real opportunity to grow with the avs

i agree with geo pricing himself out, especially if he puts up the same numbers for the next two years. I'd see us doing the same kind of thing we did with geo still though. Find somene who's a solid backup and give them the #1 role for a couple seasons till annunen is ready to go.

This is kind of what I expect. Remaining roles can likely be filled fairly cheaply. Doubt Annunen is ready to be a 1A, but I would think he is in line to be 1B with another goalie aquired that comes in cheaper than what Georgiev is going to get in his next contract. One of Girard or Manson gets moved to extend Toews.

This just further strengthens my stance that COL cannot afford to extend/resign Toews. Undo the Toews signing and keep Girard and you save yourself nearly 3mil in cap space (which you need by the looks of it).

COL fans are too spoiled. Do we all honestly think we could potentially fit 3 #1D men (Makar, Toews, Byram) on the same roster in the cap era? Lol

- Shift Wood to 3LW.
- Colton will need to take a sizeable leap to be a true 2C.
- Look for Oluasson to be a factor by this time (maybe at 3LW and leave Wood at 4LW)
- Ranta probably returns from Sweden and finds a home on the 4th line too

completely agree with everything you said. i'd prefer moving girard over manson. would imagine you'd get a better return for g and our 2 young dman are both puckmovers similar to what girard is but cheaper.

When there's a will there's a way haha. Keeping Toews is 50/50 though. May or may not happen, but he's definitely not replaceable by Girard...whereas Gulyayev and Behrens are both cheaper options that can replace Girard's same abilities.

2 years is plenty of time to take a sizeable leap. If he has legit wingers on his sides I think he's plenty capable of fulfilling that role. I see him as a Lehkonen type, who grows into a top 6er when given the opportunity, except he can play center.

I think Manson is easier/cheaper to replace in the short run. So I expect him to be moved first if Toews is extended. And honestly, I think both are moved by the time Gulyayev is ready to come over from the KHL.

Envisioning a D-core that looks something like this 3-4 years from now:

Toews - Makar
Gulyayev - Byram
Behrens - RH Soucy/Gudas Type Vet (Big Physical D on cheaper AAV than Manson)

Never said Girard replaces Toews but you’ve got 5.6mil to fill 5 more roster spots (about 5 players making 1 mil each). Keeping Girard over Toews frees up an additional 3 mill in cap space to use on signing better players than guys on near league minimum deals.

Neither Behrens nor Gulyayev have ever stepped foot on the ice at the NHL level. To say either fills Girards shoes ( who is an above average second pairing D man) is a huuuggggeee stretch

Annunun will likely top out at backup goalie, if he ever reaches even that with the Avs

Toews would need to take a bigger discount than that to be able to stay

Byram is already about as good as Toews; his biggest question mark is health and I think this is going to be the year he plays 70+ games

I don't think Colton gets to 2C but I could see him in the top six as a wing. It would be great if he did make it to 2C, I just doubt that happens.

I just allotted more $ for Toews to put the cap in perspective, but yes he'll need to take a bit less to stay. I disagree however about Byram, he has sky high potential but in this moment he is not as good as Toews. I believe he can get there but the Avs are in win now mode and I think he's two years away. This year will be a massive stepping stone for him though. Colton will be a top 6 guy it just has yet to be seen whether that will be at center or wing.
