Where do they go now

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Salminen, Samu [Reserve List]
  2. 2025 3rd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
Montreal could look to get a prospect that isn't ready to play in the AHL right now but would still have a few years of rights left. That's where Salminen comes into play, his less than conventionnal route to the NHL makes his rights expire in the summer of 2026, he's a big size center that over performed in his first NCAA year (and NA size ice) after killing it in the U20 Jokerit program, a smart player with good hands but skating issues.
Bonus he plays 88 miles away from Boston and we know Kent loves his Boston area guys, plus they've played three times against BU (Lane Hutson) so it's likely some pro scouts saw him play already.
NJD
  1. Petry, Jeff ($2,300,000 retained)
  2. 2024 7th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
The only non-canadian team I see having a fit for Petry are the Devils. Their first pair are racking up points but there could be a nice fit for an offensively minded dman to play on a third pair with Siegenthaler or Bahl.
Option one is keeping Miller as their 7th D and sending Smith on waivers would clear enough money to be cap compliant (600K left).
Option two would be to send Hughes to the minors so he can play top minutes in all situations until there's an injury in Jersey and keep Smith as you 7th D (425K left).
After losing both Severson and Graves I think the Devils might be out looking for some experience and offense to their backend.
2.
MTL
  1. 2024 4th round pick (SEA)
SEA
  1. DeSmith, Casey
Additional Details:
Martin Jones replacement? As per Seravelli the Kraken's looking to move on from Driedger and Daccord hasn't showed much in the NHL so bringing an established NHLer to split time with Grubauer sounds like a good idea. Daccord in the AHL to split time with either Kokko or Stezka would be great for their affiliated team!

Your logic is bad. Devils dont need or want Petry. Also how does the cap space work even at 50% the devils dont have room. You are panicking for no reason.

Devils would only trade for Petry if there's an injury at the deadline

Shouldn’t the Habs be paying to move Petry?

SEA declines. Likely Daccord gets the call up after a good run in the AHL as the backup

Good thing you know how to read considering cap management is listed in my only paragraph;

By bringing a defender in that means they will send a defender out.

You can't tell me that Petry isn't a better third pairing option than either Smith and Miller. He also gives flexibility by using him on the PP thus reducing the TOI of your top pairing.

Petry at 6.25M$? 100%
Petry at 2.38M$? I think a middle round pick (3rd or 4th) and your 15th best prospect is fair.

Don’t see why MTL would retain on Petry, still a top 4 dman for less than 5mill.

Why? Not saying Jersey would want him but he’s still a top 4 Dman and with what Pitt retained he comes in at an alright cap hit. If nobody wants him than the Habs should just keep him IMO.

Pens just paid a 2nd to Montreal to take him.

He may be a top four dman but with GMs will look at his last two years and say ''He isn't scoring much for an offensive defender''. At under 3M, on a third pair he'd be a good play for any contender.

The Devils' defense is going to be:

LHD: Siegenthaler, Bahl, L. Hughes, Smith
RHD: Hamilton, Marino, Miller, Nemec

And we're going to trade for a RHD who's going to cost us $4M to be a moderate upgrade on our third pairing for the next two years? Are you nuts?

If you're good with numbers you'll see that a 2.3 M$ retention is here making him a 2.38M$ player, good job on reading! Also he's far better than both Smith and Miller while, for the best of the player, Nemec would be much better playing as a number 1 in the AHL all year than a third pairing role in the NHL.
Taz liked this.

Nemec probably stays in AHL so we can slide his ELC another year. The difference between Miller and Petry…playing 14 minutes a night…probably doesn’t lead to use selling our best Center prospect.

I didn’t realize that Pittsburgh had already retained on Petry’s salary. It also doesn’t matter.

If it were just one year maybe you’d be right. But we’d be stuck with him for two years. We just traded for Miller to fill this role (Smith is irrelevant, he’s a 7th defenseman with or without Petry in the lineup), and you think it would be a good idea to trade valuable assets for a player who, in a best case scenario, would eat up $2M in cap space for two years and block our best prospect from an every day roster spot?
